What Tony Todds Canceled Candyman 4 Wouldve Been About

Between 1999’s Candyman 3: Day of the Dead and the upcoming theatrical Candyman reboot, a fourth film starring Tony Todd almost happened. When it comes to black horror icons, there are few even in the same league as Candyman. Only characters like Ben in Night of the Living Dead and Blacula compete. That’s somewhat ironic considering that the villain in Clive Barker’s original short story was a white man, but this is definitely one of those cases where an adaptation has completely usurped the original within pop culture.

Candyman, as portrayed in the films, isn’t just an urban legend grown out of the fears of the black community, he’s a response to how the white majority have treated said community over the generations. The people in Candyman’s community certainly fear him, but they also feel a sort of kinship, especially thanks to Candyman’s origin tying straight back to post-Civil War era racism and classism. Woe be to those who summon Candyman, but it’s those who don’t believe in his power that are most likely to be arrogant enough to do so.

Next year, Candyman returns to the big screen for what producer Jordan Peele has called a “spiritual sequel” to the original Candyman movie. Nia DaCosta directs, and Todd is said to be involved, but it’s unclear how. At one point though, he was supposed to star in a proper Candyman 4.

What Tony Todd’s Canceled Candyman 4 Would’ve Been About

While it doesn’t seem like a full script for a potential Candyman 4 was ever written, Tony Todd revealed some information on what the sequel would be about during a pair of 2004 interviews. The first was with Fangoria (via Movie Hole), and the second was with Milenko 500. According to Todd, a fourth Candyman film was in the works as of March 2004, with Clive Barker involved as a story consultant and executive producer. Set in New England at an all-women’s college, the story would’ve centered on a professor who happens to be a descendant of Candyman, but isn’t aware of the legend.

Candyman 4 also would’ve taken place in winter, and had Candyman stalking his prey during a blizzard, which certainly would’ve been a great visual. The plan was also to ignore Candyman 3, which most fans and critics disliked, and even Todd admits had problems. In the later interview though, Todd revealed that the project had hit stumbling blocks due to rights issues. At that point it had become murky as to who owned Candyman’s film rights, as no less than five companies had taken part in the prior films. According to Todd, Barker was trying to get the rights to his character back, but was having difficulties. While Todd sounded hopeful, obviously he and Barker were never able to work things out to make the film.
