The finishing line for Saturday Night Live’s 46th season is in sight as the season finale is quickly approaching. The iconic sketch comedy show tends to pull out all the stops for its season finales, from A-List hosts to popular musical guests. Let’s take a look at who will appear on the upcoming SNL season finale.

SNL has been a cornerstone of pop culture for decades, but the last year has been one for the books. As with every television show on air in the past year, their season was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. But instead of remaining completely off the air during strict lockdown protocol, the cast members managed to piece together remote shows, with each cast member filming their own sketches from individual quarantines. Last fall, SNL managed to do the seemingly impossible and safely return to live shows in the studio for season 46.

With accomplishments like that, SNL season 46 deserves to celebrate by going out on a high note. The show plans to do so with both a first-time host and musical guest — actress Anya Taylor-Joy as host and rapper Lil Nas X. SNL will air its season finale on May 22.

Taylor-Joy has been a rising star for years, thanks to her roles in horror movies like The Witch and Split. But she became a household name to thanks her starring role in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, which went on to break viewership records on the streaming platform. The actress has major projects on the horizon, such as The Last Night in Soho and Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. Lil Nas X exploded onto the scene with the country-hip hop song “Old Town Road,” which earned him a plethora of awards between 2019-2020. The singer’s debut album is set to drop in summer 2021.

SNL’s selection of Taylor-Joy and Lil Nas X in the host and musical is wise on multiple levels. Over the last couple of years, both the actress and the singer have become household names, meaning that they each have enough clout to likely draw in a sizeable viewership for the SNL season finale. Both Taylor-Joy and Lil Nas X are still early in their careers with bright futures ahead of them. That means if their Saturday Night Live debuts are well-received, the show could very well be looking at a repeat host and musical guest that can continue to draw fans into the show for years to come.
