Disney+ could not have picked a better time to premiere Marvel’s Hawkeye and release episodes throughout the holiday period considering the show’s festive setting, but it may leave some wondering why exactly Hawkeye takes place during Christmas. The latest television entry into the MCU follows up from the ambitious beginnings of WandaVision, the political commentary of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the time-bending Loki to deliver a more jovial flair to the growing catalog of Marvel Studios exclusives on Disney+.

Taking place in New York City during the winter holidays, Hawkeye brings back the penchant for the festive that director Shane Black instilled in the MCU with Iron Man 3 back in 2013. This time around, it’s all amped up to eleven, with Christmas decorations adorning the sets and classic festive jingles playing the background of scenes. Even the promotional images for Hawkeye are heavy on the snow and the Christmas lights. It turns out there’s a good reason behind all the kerfuffle, and Hawkeye being set during the holidays is no mere whim.

Hawkeye borrows heavily from a particular run of dedicated comic books which were written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by David Aja between 2012 and 2015. Elements that were taken from the iconic comics are the characters of Kate Bishop, golden retriever Lucky the Pizza Dog (a Matt Fraction original), and the bro-obsessed and aptly named “Tracksuit Mafia” gang of criminals. Another one of these elements is the Christmas setting, which also was essential to Fraction and Aja’s comics.

Considering how close Hawkeye already is to Fraction and Aja’s vision of the superhero, it makes sense for Marvel’s Hawkeye to also include the festive period that marked the original comics. And so there are bright lights and festive decorations galore–and that’s not a bad thing at all. Ultimately, the inclusion works in its favor. It’s a nice little touch that helps the show demarcate itself from the rest of the Disney+ MCU entries; a particularly important choice due to Hawkeye’s undeserved reputation of being the worst Avenger.

With episodes set to air across the upcoming month of December, Hawkeye is sure to cement its position as a bona fide Christmas carol for the MCU. Kevin Feige even admitted that he hopes Hawkeye becomes a Christmas classic (via ET). There’s little left but to see how it all plays out, but the first two episodes of the show look promising indeed and are filled with that warm fuzzy feeling that the winter holidays are so known for purveying.
