Anna Kendrick has responded to Amanda Seyfried’s suggestion that Kendrick would make a great Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) in the highly anticipated movie version of Wicked. L. Frank Baum’s novel, which inspired the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz, also served as inspiration for the Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Stephen Schwartz, Winnie Holzman, and Marc Platt brought Maguire’s novel to life in the form of a Broadway musical, Wicked, originally starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. A Wicked movie has now been in the works for nearly a decade.

The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch may have been peripheral characters in The Wizard of Oz, but they’re at the forefront in Wicked, which takes a deeper look into their lives before and after Dorothy entered the picture. In 2016, Universal set the Wicked movie’s release for December of 2019, but the studio ultimately decided to release Cats during that time instead. More than a year later, the initial pieces for the Wicked movie are still coming into place. Jon M. Chu recently replaced Stephen Daldry as director, but the cast is still yet to be announced. Seyfried has made it known that she would love to star as Glinda. She also expressed that Kendrick is one of her dream co-stars to play Elphaba.

E! News asked Kendrick her thoughts on Seyfried’s idea, but she was unable to give a definitive answer. “Oh, these questions are always tricky to answer, to not create a thing,” she said. “I mean, obviously like, Wicked is a masterpiece and a classic and it’s an iconic show and that’s all I’ll say about that.” Kendrick didn’t realize Seyfried had publicly named her in relation to Elphaba’s casting. Kendrick’s full comment can be read below:

“That’s so funny. I hadn’t heard that, but I, when I met her in real life, she said that to me. So I was like, what are you, eavesdropping on that conversation? I didn’t know that she’d said that…So she didn’t just say it to my face to be nice.”

After all of the thought and planning Seyfried has put into the movie version of Wicked, it would certainly be disappointing to see anyone else play Glinda. She even took voice lessons during the pandemic in preparation to hit the notes that Wicked will require. Seyfried is also quite experienced in the world of musical films, starring in Mamma Mia!, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Les Misérables. Based on her enthusiasm for playing Glinda in Wicked, there’s no doubt that Seyfried will put her whole heart into the performance to make it as strong as possible. Fans will just have to wait a little bit longer to see if she gets her wish and to see who will play Elphaba, but hopefully, it won’t be too much longer of a wait.
