Wife Swap: 15 Reasons Why Chi-Chi And Bulma From Dragon Ball Should Switch It Up

Vegeta and Bulma and Chi-Chi and Goku might be iconic couples on Dragon Ball, but we at TheGamer have to wonder what it’d be like if they swapped.

Romance is an area of the Dragon Ball franchise that seems to matter much more to fans than the creator Akira Toriyama himself. There has been so much discussion about the relationships between Goku and Chi-Chi, Gohan and Videl, Krillin and Android 18, and so on and so on. But as far as Toriyama himself goes, he has gone on record to say that he doesn’t like writing romance. He’s much more interested in writing about comedy and fighting and the romance part of Dragon Ball has always been a distant side show in comparison to ongoing action.

As a result of this lack of development, fans have been left to fill in the gaps about lots of relationships on the show and wondering who really belongs with who. A pairing that is often thought of by people is Bulma and Goku. I’ll get into more details about how those two would work later, but for the purpose of this article, let’s pretend that for a limited time Chi-Chi and Bulma decided to swap husbands. Why? Eh, because it will make for a fun exercise and gives us an opportunity to theorize about how these characters would react to this situation. That’s right, fictional characters, dance for my amusement, muahahaha!!!

Just to be clear, this isn’t a shipping article saying that Vegeta should have married Chi-Chi or anything like that (besides, we know he should just propose to Goku already). Here are 15 reasons why Chi-Chi and Bulma need to swap Saiyans right now.

15 They’ve Joked About It Already

The Peaceful World Saga was the final series of episodes in the Dragon Ball Z show, and while no villains threaten the world (hence the title), we did get some looks at how young characters would grow as well as some funny moments. This one was a good example.

As Bulma is hosting a party, Goku ends up being late (doesn’t that sound familiar?) and Chi-Chi is predictably nettled. Bulma as well is worried about where Goku is, and that’s where things get interesting. Chi-Chi, in a joking matter, says that they should trade mates. Goku goes with Bulma and Chi-Chi with Vegeta! When Yamcha tries to step in and make himself available, they say they want a trade, not a downgrade. This dialogue was only in the English dub, but let’s roll with it.

14 It Would Make Them Appreciate Their Husbands

You don’t know what you have until you lose it. This is an often repeated phrase that might be brushed off by some people, but I find to be totally true. For myself as well, I think for all four parties involved in this mental exercise this would ring very true.

Chi-Chi might be fed up with Goku at times, but a part of her must like the fact that Goku is never in a bad mood and will always have a smile on his face. Bulma might get annoyed that Vegeta isn’t a social butterfly and is often times in a dour mood, but she would definitely miss him if he went away. Goku would want someone less demanding than Chi-Chi, and Vegeta would miss Bulma simply because THAT’S HIS BULMA!!!

13 Bulma Has Better Food

No matter who we try and pair him with, we know that Goku’s ultimate love is food. He’s not picky about it and will try anything, but there’s no doubt that anybody can get in the way of his torrid love affair. Luckily for our gluttonous hero, Bulma has no shortage of food to deliver to him.

It should be said that Goku and his family aren’t poor by any means, especially by the time of Dragon Ball Super. However, compared to Bulma, the Son family is definitely a few notches below the Briefs. Every time Bulma throws a party you can see piles of food that are good enough to even please Gods who have lived for several millennia. Chi-Chi is probably a better cook than Bulma herself, but Bulma got them chef connections yo.

12 Chi-Chi Would Be More Relaxed

A huge reason why Chi-Chi is seen as one of the most hated characters in the franchise is because fans blame her for “ruining” Gohan and for “angry” being her default state of emotion. But I can totally see why. Goku is an unreliable man-child who, even in his late thirties, still is a buffoon in social situations.

While Vegeta is no saint by any means, compared to Goku he is a much more dependable person. He was much more active in the raising of his children than Goku was, he can cook and help around the house and he will actually show up to social events even if he is a moody loner. Chi-Chi will no longer be on a hair trigger because of stress, and it would do her some good.

11 Bulma Is Fine With How Goku Is

Meeting each other when they were both much younger, Goku has spent infinitely more time with Bulma than he has with his own wife. They’ve known each other for over 20 years and have seen each other grow into the people they are today while going on several different adventures together. Bulma, without a doubt, knows Goku better than Chi-Chi, and Goku knows Bulma better than he does Chi-Chi.

Knowing how each one of them would react in a certain situation and being aware of what each other likes makes for a healthy relationship. That isn’t to say that Bulma never blows up at Goku, but some of that is needed to keep the Saiyan in line. Goku needs to have a little fear of his girls.

10 Goku And Vegeta Would Get The Dirt

Watching Dragon Ball when I was younger, the feud between Goku and Vegeta was super serious. How dare anyone poke fun at them! As myself and other fans have grown up, we now can laugh and poke fun at these two rivals. It’s time that Goku and Vegeta themselves did so as well.

Living with each other’s wives for at least a little bit would give each other an opportunity to talk with them and get all the dirt on each other. Imagine Vegeta hearing about all the embarrassing stories about Goku that Chi-Chi has racked up over the years. Seeing as how Vegeta has spent so much time with Bulma compared to Goku and Chi-Chi, it’s fair to assume Vegeta will have plenty of ammo to use against Kakarot for poking fun.

9 Chi-Chi Could Use Some Help

Vegeta has come a long way since the start of Dragon Ball Z. No longer just a warrior hellbent on immortality, Vegeta is now fully adjusted to life on earth and seems to determined to not make the same mistakes in raising his newest child Bra as he did with Trunks. As we saw in episode 83 of Dragon Ball Super, papa Vegeta is adorable and way more helping than Goku as a parent.

We have to think about the fact that Chi-Chi has managed a household and raised two children almost exclusively on her own. While she probably could continue to do so, we would like to think that she would appreciate any help she can get. At very least, Vegeta can outdo Goku in one area.

8 We’ve Never Seen Vegeta And Chi Chi Interact

For as close as Vegeta, Goku, and Bulma all are to each other, Chi-Chi is another story. She’s Goku’s wife, of course, and is friendly enough with Bulma. But as far as Chi-Chi and Vegeta go, they’ve barely uttered two words towards each other in the entire franchise.

There are few story avenues that haven’t been explored in the countless pieces of Dragon Ball media throughout its decades of existence, but this is one of them. That’s pretty crazy to think about, considering that Vegeta and Chi-Chi are both eternally linked to Goku. What better way is there for them to know each other than to live together for some period of time? Heck, with how much more domesticated Vegeta is, she might end up knowing him better than she does Goku.

7 It Would Be Hysterical

I love Dragon Ball Z, but there are times in the series where things way too serious and ultimately that isn’t Akira Toriyama’s style. Toriyama’s heart lies in humor and that’s where his genius shines greatest. Now, can you imagine the amount of fun he could have with a situation where Bulma and Chi-Chi would swap husbands?

I’ve tried and will continue to try my best at making some jokes throughout this article, but I know for a fact that I can’t sharpen Toriyama’s pencil. I have no doubt in the almighty creator’s ability to take a ridiculous situation and turn it into a classic episode. He would do it justice, and we’d all love watching it.

6 New Parenting Skills

I’ve voiced my frustrations with Goten in the past (check my previous article for that), and much of that might be the result of having a poor father like Goku. Goku is more of a good friend than he is somebody who can’t teach Goten about anything other than fighting. Trunks, on the other hand, is a cocky son of a gun whose pride he gets from both his father and mother.

If Goku and Vegeta switch control of parenting their kids, it could be beneficial to both Trunks and Goten. In Goten’s case, Vegeta could show him some discipline and toughen him up a bit. In terms of Trunks, Goku can teach him about being humble and showing him how he can be nicer to be people. Win-win for me.

5 Bulma Already Thinks Goku Is Cute

It’s easy to forget about sometimes because they’re usually all covered up. But if Goku and Vegeta were to exist in real life, they would be absolute beefcakes. These two guys have trained most of their lives, and yet all of that power is packed on to what are basically human frames. Bulma herself commented on Goku himself way back in the original Dragon Ball.

At the start of the Piccolo Jr. saga, Goku returns to meet up with his friends at the World Martial Arts Tournament after not seeing them for years. Immediately upon seeing him, his friends wonder who he is as he’s changed so much. But once Bulma finds out who he is, she comments on how handsome Goku has become. Considering how he basically looks the same now except for more muscle, we’d say Bulma still thinks he’s attractive.

4 Goku’s Training Would Improve

Wife Swap 15 Reasons Why ChiChi And Bulma From Dragon Ball Should Switch It Up

When Goku flew to Namek all those years ago in the Frieza saga, his power level increased dramatically thanks to the increased gravity training he endured on the spaceship. Oddly enough, aside from his visits to King Kai’s planet, Goku doesn’t seem to use the extra gravity training ever again, even though Bulma has a facility where he can do just that.

Maybe it’s because Vegeta wouldn’t want to share his secret training ground with his friend/rival, but if they were to do the wife swap then Goku would no doubt have access to gravity chamber. His power could increase even more than under the 10x multiplier on King Kai’s planet. That would just anger Vegeta even more. Do it!

3 Chi-Chi And Vegeta Can Spar

Wife Swap 15 Reasons Why ChiChi And Bulma From Dragon Ball Should Switch It Up

An often forgotten aspect of Chi-Chi’s character by fans (and to be honest, Akira Toriyama himself) is that Chi-Chi is a competent fighter. Obviously, her power level is not even close to her husband or even Yamcha for that matter, but she’s not a complete weakling. Heck, she could beat Mr. Satan if they fought!

Despite being surrounded by martial artists ever since she was in her teens, Bulma has never shown a hunger for fighting at all. Not that it’s seemed to bother Vegeta at all, but there might be a part of him that would be down to have a friendly sparring match as a “date night.” I think Vegeta has reached a point where he wouldn’t knock her into a tree, like Goku did.

2 Vegeta Can Have A Literal Princess

Wife Swap 15 Reasons Why ChiChi And Bulma From Dragon Ball Should Switch It Up

Vegeta has largely dropped this former moniker of his, but there was a time when he would bellow to anyone within earshot that he is the Prince Of All Saiyans! Well, a prince needs a princess, does he not? That’s where Chi-Chi would come in.

It may not be relevant anymore, but it is worth noting here that Chi-Chi is technically a princess. Her father, after all, is a guy known as the Ox-King, who is the king of Fire Mountain. We doubt that Vegeta is the kind of prince that Chi-Chi was thinking about when she was a kid, but who can say no to that majestic cape? It would also give us our first royal family in Dragon Ball. Wouldn’t that be something?

1 It Would Be Good Filler

Wife Swap 15 Reasons Why ChiChi And Bulma From Dragon Ball Should Switch It Up

It might be the bane of some fans’ existence, but filler is just a part of the Dragon Ball franchise. There are no two ways about it. While there definitely is a bunch of filler that is hot garbage, it’s not all like that; we have classic episodes like the driving episode from Z or the baseball game from Super. I feel that this little experiment of mine would fit into this category of funny filler.

Once the Tournament of Power arc ends, we’re going to need a cooldown from all the universal destruction and mayhem. Why not do something like this to give us a nice hearty laugh? I’ll take that over most other scenarios that Toei and Toriyama might think of, thank you very much.
