Xbox Series S Price Has Already Been Reduced In Japan

Xbox has already reduced the price of the Series S in Japan despite the fact its pre-orders are yet to go live.

Pre-orders for next-gen consoles have been a bit of a mess. Sony took gamers hopeful of guaranteeing themselves a PS5 on release day by surprise when it began pre-orders directly after its showcase last week. Xbox promised to do better when it launched pre-orders for the Series X and Series S this week. It kept that promise, but only by the slightest of margins.

One thing is for certain. Next-gen consoles in all their forms are in high demand. That’s why it might come as quite the surprise to hear that the Series S, the cheapest of all the consoles on offer, has already been the subject of a price cut. The price cut has only been executed in Japan, and it isn’t through fear of the console’s popularity or potential lack thereof.

Famitsu revealed that the price of the Series S has been reduced by ¥3000 ($28.50) to ¥29,980 ($285). That might seem like a minor and arbitrary price cut to make to some, especially before the console has even gone on sale. There is a method to the madness, though. Xbox revealed its next-gen prices before Sony, so did not know how much cheaper or more expensive its own consoles would be in comparison to the PS5.

While the Series S is far cheaper than both versions of the PS5, this slight reduction in Japan makes it a full ¥10,000 ($95) cheaper than the PS5’s digital edition. A nice round number that could make all the difference when Japanese gamers are weighing up which console to buy. Xbox needs all the help it can get too as its standing in Japan is still pretty weak.

Releasing the Series X and Series S on November 19, 2020, in Japan is already a big step forward. Japanese Xbox fans, of which there aren’t that many, had to wait almost an entire year longer than the rest of the world for the Xbox One. Phil Spencer has made it very clear that Xbox intends on building its relationship with Japanese gamers in a major way this generation. The price reduction of the Series S ahead of pre-orders going live in the country this Friday is a clever move in that regard.
