The soundtracks for both Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are now available to stream on various platforms. Both are fantastic soundtracks to have in the background while working and drumming up feelings of playing the games for the first time many years ago.

Square Enix made the announcement with little prior notice, stating on Twitter that the music would be available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, ANiUTa, AWA, Line Music, SMART USEN, and more. Until now, it has been no easy task to listen to the soundtracks outside of places like YouTube.

While these are some of the most iconic soundtracks ever made for an RPG, the creation of the music has an interesting story. In 1995, Yasunori Mitsuda had to all but issue an ultimatum to Square when the game was being made to allow him to compose for a game, or he would go elsewhere. Square relented in this demand and tasked Mitsuda with creating the music for Chrono Trigger, and the rest is history, as the RPG is considered among the best ever made and the music is inseparable from the story. Following the success of the first game, Mitsuda went on to also compose for the sequel in 2000, Chrono Cross.

Mitsuda was not the only one working on these tracks. Nobuo Uematsu contributed “Sealed Door,” one of the most memorable songs in the game. Most know Uematsu for his many iconic soundtracks composed in the Final Fantasy series, and he is widely regarded as one of the best composers in the industry.

It is great to see these kinds of soundtracks become available in a legitimate way. For too long, players have had to resort to YouTube playlists of dubious quality. Now, the soundtrack provided through these various platforms sounds perfect, as though one were playing the game again for the first time.

Fans of old game playlists should also take a peek at some of the recent remixes made that re-imagine the theme or moods of the soundtracks. One of the most well-known, and well-made examples of this can be seen in TPRs melancholic interpretations of the Final Fantasy series, as well as games in the Zelda and Chrono series.
