Sports video games definitely had their detractors throughout the ages, with one of the most common criticisms being the fact that most big sports games frequently put out a new game annually, which means that tons are rushed and don’t actually end up making any necessary changes.

That being said, plenty of the following games are going to end up having a lot more flaws than just rotating faces in for the more recent year’s entry.

10 FIFA ’06

FIFA has always been a series that’s done some decent numbers, whether those numbers are well-deserved or not. The games take place in soccer games, which I’ll not recount the rules of here. The issue with FIFA ’06 isn’t necessarily that it does anything ridiculously wrong, the issue is more so that it doesn’t really do anything right.

The game doesn’t make any drastic changes to the formula, most likely because of the weird in-between phase that happened between the PS2-era and the next-gen.

9 Madden NFL ’09

While there are plenty of Madden games that haven’t gotten the greatest of reception, one that stands among the rest is Madden NFL ’09, which is widely known in the community for having more than a few issues.

The game features a few new changes to the games, but aside from that, it also featured… patches! Aside from the well-known problems E.A.has introduced into games in general, one of them is releasing entirely broken games, and then patching them later on. This is pretty much why this game is awful.

8 WWE: Legends Of WrestleMania

10 Awful Sports Games That Sold Well But Got Terrible Reviews

In concept, WWE: Legends Of WrestleMania is pretty awesome. It features wrestlers from across pretty much all of wrestling’s history, including everyone from Hulk Hogan to modern classics like John Cena, which allows for the series to resonate across generations of wrestling fans.

The game fails when we start to talk about how it actually works in practice, and that’s… not very well. The game was ridiculously glitchy and sacrificed complexity for accessibility.

7 NBA Live ’14

10 Awful Sports Games That Sold Well But Got Terrible Reviews

NBA Live ’14 isn’t really something that fans of the franchise like talking about, and for pretty good reason. While the series has been pretty well-received in general, this is one of the entries in the series that no one talks about, despite it being one of the bigger franchises in the genre.

One of the biggest issues with this game is that it came out in the very same year as NBA 2k14 which means that in comparison, it looks awful, especially given the 3-year wait that fans waited out.

6 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006

Another victim of the curse of 2006 is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006. It belongs to a franchise that isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, but then again, sports games aren’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea.

The issue with this game again lies in the fact that there aren’t really any new changes made from the predecessors, and when it comes to something as constant and slow as golf, this isn’t a plus. The game received fairly decent reviews from critics, but fans hated it.

5 WWE 2K20

10 Awful Sports Games That Sold Well But Got Terrible Reviews

WWE 2K20 is kind of a stain on the history of a franchise that hasn’t historically been panned. Perhaps the reason for this is that wrestling fans know what they’re getting into when they buy a game in the series.

The series doesn’t take itself seriously, which only makes sense given how wrestling is perceived by the world at large. The biggest issue with this game is that at its release, it was such a buggy mess that a lot of fans and critics alike pretty much considered it unplayable.

4 NFL Head Coach

What could be more entertaining than winning a football-themed video game that consistently rewards you for making throwing-plays and makes runs almost completely useless? Being the coach who tells them where to throw the ball! The issue with this game is the fact that the player of any other NFL game pretty much has already played this game, except in every other football game they’ve ever played, deciding which plays their team would make.

In NFL Head Coach, the player does that but controls none of the team.

3 Madden NFL 25

Madden NFL 25 isn’t exactly a bad entry on its own, but it is when we look at the rest of the media surrounding the main release. There was an IOS version of the game, and if you can’t immediately tell why that’s a terrible idea, we’ll detail it here.

For fans who thought they were going to get a comparable experience, the outrage was immense, considering the iOS version was pretty much useless. The graphics were awful, the gameplay was stripped down, and it was overall awful.

2 NBA In The Zone 98

When it comes to absolute giants in the world of sports games, who else would we even talk about other than… Konami? Oh yeah, pretty much anyone else!

This game is the reason that Konami pretty much left the game (no pun intended) in addition to the reason they stopped basketball specifically. This game was consistently blurry and had pretty much no allowance for the player to screw up, considering the fact that the AI of the computers almost never misses shots.

1 Three Lions

Three Lions is a game that was made in England, and was later ported over to the United States instead as Alexi Lalas Internation Soccer. The game was the official game of the English soccer team, which hyped pretty much everyone who was a fan of the team up to absolutely no end.

Unfortunately for the reputation of the developers and any hope they or the team had for the future of these types of games, the scoring system was trash, the graphics were awful, and it was more or less a critical bomb.
