The Angry Video Game Nerd or AVGN is a character created and performed by online personality James Rolfe of Cinemassacre. Since 2004, James Rolfe has entertained the online world through The Angry Video Game Nerd with his profanity-filled and humorous reviews of nostalgic video games.

With hundreds of episodes available to watch on YouTube, The Angry Video Game Nerd has shown nothing but dedication to making entertaining reviews that often become short films. His best episodes often blend expert commentary with creative production values that always enlighten and entertain his viewers.

The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

In the last episode of 2019, AVGN celebrated the New Year by having a review of Majora’s Mask. Like always, he has a theme to fit the game and it features the Nerd about to experience the end of the world as 2020 arrives. In hindsight, this joke is even funnier now considering all that happened in that year.

The review portion of the video is also entertaining as he takes on the now cult-classic Majora’s Mask and praises it for its strange and macabre story and elements. However, he does point out the many frustrating aspects such as the constant rewinding of time, cheap dungeons, and is notoriously difficult Zelda game to complete.

Bugs Bunny’s Crazy Castle

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

One of the Nerd’s most hated enemies is none other than Bugs Bunny, who first appeared in the Bugs Bunny’s Birthday Blowout review. Now Bugs is out for revenge against the Nerd resulting in fights that continuously get more and more ridiculous, violent, and even a bit gory.

Between fights, the Nerd reviews the franchise of Crazy Castle games that nobody expected to last for so long. With five Crazy Castle games to review, the Nerd and Bugs continue to go at each other while keeping many jokes and gags from classic Bugs Bunny cartoons but in a more R-rated fashion. Bugs is portrayed by James Rolfe’s friend Mike Matei and his dark portrayal of the beloved Looney Tunes character will make anyone laugh.

Game Glitches

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

Some of the best AVGN episodes are the ones where he branches out to review other things about gaming. In this episode, the Nerd showcases glitches across the ages of gaming from the original Atari 2600 to the Nintendo Wii. The standout of the episode is the Glitch Gremlin, an Irish imp that lives inside game cartridges and CDs to make the games unplayable.

The Glitch Gremlin is another standout character who makes the Nerd miserable but makes the audience laugh, especially when the Nerd showcases a very defective copy of Rocky for the PlayStation 2. Sadly, the Gremlin only appeared in cameos in the future but at least he made an impact.

Seaman

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

After the obvious joke made about the title of the game, the Nerd reviews Sega’s Seaman, one of many standout titles for the Sega Dreamcast. This was after the tragic passing of Leonard Nimoy, who is the guide for the player in the game and as such, James Rolfe dedicated the episode to the actor.

Being a touching tribute aside, the review for Seaman is great to watch as the Nerd gives the game a lot of praise for being unique but also pokes fun at how bizarre it can be but also rather tedious. Like in many episodes, some of the jokes turn into giant skits that feel welcome and give the episode extra flavor.

Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

As his catchy theme song suggests, AVGN mainly reviews bad games to make the show more comedic as he suffers through them. However, every now and then, the Nerd tackles a classic game such as when he reviewed Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins for the NES in a Halloween special.

This one is a more straightforward review, relying less on skits and a plot to drive the episode. However, he goes all out in trying to beat one of the hardest games for the NES. Though he praises the game, he slowly devolves into despising the game due to its brutal difficulty and forcing the player to play through the game twice to beat it. The angrier the Nerd gets, the funnier the review gets.

AVGN Games

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

The Angry Video Game Nerd is a series with a massive amount of fans across the internet. As a result, some of the fans have created games based on the show and the character. So for an entire episode, the Nerd showcases many fan-made games as well as his gratitude to his fans for all they’ve done over the years.

At the same time, the Nerd finishes the episode by reviewing the officially made game based on him: The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. In a surprise twist, rather than just praising it, he actually shows more rage and anger towards it than the fan-made games since it takes many elements of the games he’s reviewed in the past and makes a good but brutally difficult action sidescroller.

Castlevania Retrospective

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

The first game that the Angry Video Game Nerd ever reviewed was Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, back when he was simply the Angry Nintendo Nerd. However, years later, he made a four-part episode reviewing multiple games and telling his history with the beloved Castlevania franchise.

From the original NES games all the way to Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. He even returns to Simon’s Quest to not only beat the game but give a better review of it, both praising and critiquing it. Any fan of the long-running Castlevania series should check out this episode for its more positive and touching tone as well as some good humor.

Superman 64 Returns

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

In the early seasons, AVGN took on Superman on the Nintendo 64, one of the worst games ever made. However, it was not an extensive review so, in 2019, he returned to the game and did what many gamers refused to do: actually beat Superman 64 and showcase the broken mess that each level becomes. This is an episode that shows James Rolfe’s dedication to getting details just right.

For example, he goes into detail about how the game is a poor representation of Superman: The Animated Series. In addition, he features many jokes based on the series and the comics. He even references other DC material such as a poke at the CGI lip in the theatrical Justice League cut, and he pays tribute to the final fight between Superman and Zod in Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel.

Spawn Games

10 Best Episodes Of The Angry Video Game Nerd

James Rolfe shows off his love for the Spawn franchise with this episode. From entire segments being drawn in a comic book style to the Nerd having to review a series of Spawn games to get out of Hell. The show-stealer, however, is Justin Silverman as the Clown/Violator who looks and acts straight out of the comics much like John Leguizamo’s guilty pleasure portrayal in the Spawn movie.

The Nerd delves into the deep history of the Spawn comics while reviewing several game adaptations, some of them being gems that he praises. Add in some well-timed humor mixing the dark humor of Spawn comics with the usual AVGN-style jokes, it makes for an entertaining episode from beginning to end.

Earthbound

One of the most requested games fans wanted the Nerd to look at is the beloved Earthbound. It took a long time but finally, in 2018, AVGN dropped an Earthbound review and it was worth the wait. It’s one of the most positive reviews he’s ever given with high production value as he plays Earthbound, beats it, and joins the fanbase that considers it a top-tier RPG.

That being said, it’s still an episode of AVGN so the Nerd still finds a way to pump out profanity and critique the game. He brings up some genuine flaws with Earthbound such as the constant interruptions, cryptic solutions, and a tedious inventory system. On top of that, the Nerd lends his own theories about events in Earthbound and tributes it with a humorous skit that honors the vast history of past AVGN episodes.
