Despite 2020 taking its toll on a lot of the world, it has been a fantastic year for Nintendo. And with all of the delays in the gaming industry this year, it’s looking like 2021 will be even better.

Not only are there loads of official announcements for next year, but as Nintendo often likes to keep its cards close to its chest, there’s a lot of rumors out there about what Nintendo gamers have to look forward to too.

10 Pokemon Master Collection

Pokemon hasn’t been quiet this past year, as the franchise has already seen the subscription service Pokemon Home and the Sword & Shields DLCs. It’s looking like that success is going to continue into 2021. A listing of the Pokemon Master Collection was listed on the Game website earlier this year, and though there wasn’t much information and it has since been deleted, it’s rumored to include Switch ports of Pokemon Red, Gold, and Ruby.

9 Mario Kart 9

Though an enhanced version of Mario Kart 8 came to the Nintendo Switch in 2017, there hasn’t been a new entry into the franchise since 2014. Mario Kart 9 was even rumored to be released in the backend of 2020, but given the circumstances of this year, it seems unlikely. However, as it was rumored for last year, it’s all but confirmed that it’ll see release in 2021. There are a lot of great Mario Kart tracks, but it’s about time we got some new ones.

8 F-Zero

Though Shigeru Miyamoto claimed he doesn’t want to make a new F-Zero game, which is one of the things you didn’t know about the game F-Zero, he has either had a change of heart or there’s just no stopping Nintendo.

As there are very few racing games on the Nintendo Switch that isn’t Mario Kart, it seems to have prompted them to take more interest in the beloved franchise, as a new F-Zero Twitter account was discovered by fans.

7 Ninja Gaiden

In a similar fashion to Pokemon Master Collection, Game Source Entertainment inadvertently uploaded a listing for an upcoming Ninja Gaiden game, which is rumored to see release in March. It has been a long time since a new Ninja Gaiden release saw the light of day, but the news is bittersweet, as the game is purportedly a remake of the original trilogy. But at this point, any Ninja Gaiden release is good news.

6 The Outer Worlds 2

It might only be recently that a port of The Outer Worlds was released for the Nintendo Switch, but due to its resounding success, despite a ton of glitches, it looks like a sequel may be coming sooner rather than later. The Outer Worlds 2 is reportedly already in production, and though 2021 sounds a little too hopeful, it has fans speculating, and depending on how far into production the developer is, a 2021 release is possible

5 Fire Emblem

It only makes sense that Nintendo is rumored to be remaking a Fire Emblem game, as they reported that the last entry in the series, Three Houses, was the best selling game of the series. And as remakes are what’s all the excitement now, it’s a smart move for Nintendo to cash in on it. Which game that is in the works is unknown, and given that there are so many games in the series, the remake could be anyone’s guess.

4 Super Monkey Ball

Despite Super Monkey Ball being one of the best multiplayer games to play at a party, the franchise has remained dormant for way too long. With there only ever being two games released in the series, a third entry was set for release way back in 2004, but it was eventually canceled.

After over a decade of rumors and false hope, it looks likely that fans may see the third game in 2021. Earlier in the year, Brian Matt, who worked on the original games, posted a cryptic hint on Instagram that SPM3 was in the works, though there’s little else to go off.

3 The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

With Skyward Sword originally being a 2011 game for the Nintendo Wii, it’s quite an outlier in the Zelda franchise due to not being set in Hyrule, but instead, the cloud city known as Skyloft. It’s a quirky game that received mixed reviews owing to the strange interactivity players had when using the Wii remote like a sword, so it’d be interesting to see how Nintendo fixes this for a Switch release. A release of the remake is rumored for 2021 thanks to Amazon UK accidentally allowing for pre-orders of the game earlier this year.

2 Metroid Prime 4

Though she was written as a male at first, which is one of the wild details about Samus, Metroid features arguably the greatest heroin in Nintendo’s canon of characters. The massively in-demand sequel has been in the works for years, but problems with development have put numerous halts on the game. But with all of that in the past and momentum pushing forward, it seems likely that we’ll finally see Samus again in 2021.

1 The legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

Though Breath of The Wild has spawned some hilarious memes, it is also considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. Though fans were thirsty for the classic game’s sequel to be released this year, that’s clearly not going to happen, especially seeing as the original game was such an achievement in open-world gameplay. However, though these things take time, optimism is now shining on 2021.
