Unlike the Impa we see in Ocarina of Time or Breath of the Wild, Age of Calamity’s Impa is a somewhat energetic and bubbly Sheikah whose powers make her one of the more formidable characters in Hyrule who doesn’t possess a piece of the Triforce. Taking many cues from the Yiga who defected from the Sheikah, her attacks are fast, precise, and deadly.

Impa is a fairly straightforward character to play as in Age of Calamity, but the addition of her clone symbols, as well as how they change her other attacks, means that she can take some time to get used to and master before reaching her full potential against the Calamity’s hordes.

Playstyle

Unlike the original Hyrule Warriors, whose Giant Sword attacks were slow but very powerful, Impa in Age of Calamity is all about speed and precision, and in this way, she is more like Sheik from the original Hyrule Warriors than any other character. When she is alone, she will deal a lot of good damage to single targets, while her horde clearing leaves little to be desired. Once she has a few clones to fight alongside her, however, she turns into a lightning-fast killing machine who can deal more damage than any other character very quickly.

Strong Attack

If Impa’s strong attack is used outside of a combo attack, she will leap forward almost instantly to attack a single target, dealing decent damage to weaker enemies that usually kills them in one blow. Although this attack is much slower than her basic string, it is useful for closing the gap and reaching strong enemies faster. When combined with her clone symbols, Impa will perform a follow-up strike that will absorb the symbol and add two more clones to her side. In general, this attack isn’t great for dealing damage, but it does have its uses from time to time.

Special Attack

Impa’s special attack involves a lot of bombs, though the actual animation and damage changes depending on how many symbols have been absorbed. At 0-2, she will simply throw a bomb at a target directly in front of her. At all three, she will instead perform a wider AOE attack in front of her that deals increased damage, though will reduce her total symbols back down to one.

After performing a special attack, Impa will automatically absorb one additional symbol if she is at less than three, making it a good way to quickly add more clones to your side of the fight if absorbing them manually is proving to be ineffective.

Basic Combo String

Impa’s first couple of attacks are single target focused, but the later attacks in the combo string are much wider and better at dealing with hordes as well as far away enemies. Her basic combo string is also finished very quickly, meaning she can often execute the entire string and start a new one before any other character has finished their own, with the exception of much shorter strings like Zelda’s Sheikah Slate or Revali’s grounded attacks.

Strong Attack Combos

Most of Impa’s strong attack combos are focused on dealing damage in a wide-angle in front of her, though her fourth combo deals decent damage to single targets as well as dealing damage in the air to hit Wizzrobes. Her third combo will also place a symbol on a nearby enemy if she has none absorbed already, making it a good way to quickly start the process of getting clones while dealing good damage at the same time.

Weak Point Drainer

Impa’s damage output increases significantly as she gains more clones, so this should be taken into account when trying to drain weak points. Her third combo with three symbols absorbed, where her clones shoot a beam of energy at the target, is her best weak point drainer and is capable of draining weak points nearly instantly. With any fewer symbols absorbed, her fourth combo is the next best option though can be a little slow to execute without the assistance of Stasis.

Sheikah Runes

Like a few other characters, Impa gets locked in place after using Statis, though this can be circumvented by simply dodging out of it to allow her to deal substantially more damage, especially if she has the maximum number of clones. Bombs are also a decent option for single targets, particularly if their weak point gauge is up, though is less useful in battle than simply attacking.

Unlike most other characters, Impa’s Magnesis Rune is actually great for dealing with a large number of enemies all around her, as it performs a spinning attack before smashing into the ground in front of her. Like Link, Impa’s Cryonis is able to launch her into the air, though she doesn’t need this as much as other characters.

Defending

Impa doesn’t have the ability to dodge through damage and will take damage just as easily as every other character. Her ease of movement around the battlefield, along with the fact that she has no shield to parry with, means it is best to learn her dodge timing as her Flurry Rush attacks are quite powerful and fast.

Weapon Modifiers

Surprisingly for a melee character, Impa’s attacks actually have a decent amount of range on them. With this in mind, along with her quick attack speed, her weapons best modifiers are Attack Speed, Attack Range, and Standard Attack damage increases. Impa’s combo attacks are naturally fast, so you should capitalize on this and use standard string combos as much as possible, especially while she has three symbols absorbed.

Unique Action

Impa’s unique action will place a clone symbol on a nearby enemy, which can be absorbed by using the strong attack. This method of absorbing symbols can be a little slow, especially if she is being attacked on all sides as the absorption attack can be interrupted if she is attacked midway through the combo. For the most part, the best time to use this while a strong enemy isn’t attacking, either while under Stasis or while stunned, or to use it on an enemy that is on the outskirts of the group where Impa is less likely to come under attack.
