A dedicated group of Pokémon fans took it upon themselves to celebrate Halloween by carving all 135 Pokémon from Ruby and Sapphire Gen III into jack-o’-lanterns, which they proudly displayed in their yard. While carving a single pumpkin is a tradition that many people partake in to celebrate the fall season, one group of friends has made it an annual tradition to carve an entire generation of Pokémon into dozens of pumpkins to light up the neighborhood and show their love for the series.

Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald introduced the third generation of Pokémon, bringing 135 new species to the series. Gen III also marked the introduction of some of several iconic Legendary Pokémon, including Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, the Regis, and Deoxys. When Gen III was released in 2002, it added the largest number of new Pokémon since Gen I (which famously kicked off the franchise with the original 151), as Gen II had only brought 100 new species to the table. Pokémon: Ruby and Sapphire were also the last of the Game Boy era of Pokémon games, and therefore hold a very special place in many players’ hearts.

For Halloween this year, streamer and Pokémon fanatic LCKraken and his housemates carved all 135 Gen III Pokémon onto 97 pumpkins, even carving some of the pumpkins live on LCKraken’s Twitch channel. The pumpkins were carved over the course of eight days and were proudly displayed on the flatmates’ front porch once completed. Perhaps the most impressive part of these carved pumpkins is the technique used to give them so much detail; while it would have been simple to punch out each Pokémon’s silhouette, LCKraken and his roomies carved away layers of the pumpkins’ skin varying the shading of different parts of the Pokémon to make each one more unique and recognizable.

However, this wasn’t their first – or even second – Pokémon jack-‘o-lantern rodeo, as carving a generation of Pokémon has become an annual tradition for him and his flatmates. In 2019, the 100 Pokémon from Gold and Silver were carved, and in 2018 he carved all 151 original Pokémon from Red & Blue. The process of carving this year’s batch of Pumpkémon was documented in part on LCKraken’s Twitter feed, and the broadcasts of the pumpkin carving streams are still available to watch on his Twitch.

This tradition is wild and requires an insane amount of determination to complete, and the most populous generations of Pokémon games have yet to come . If the tradition continues, LCKraken and company will have a bit of a lighter year in 2021 since Gen IV only added 107 Pokémon to the series, but 2022 will be rough because they will have to tackle all 156 Unovan Pokémon. For now, though, congratulations are in order for the three Toronto-based Pokémon fans after making another huge step towards completing their Pumpkémon National Dex.
