Ben Affleck said that he considers George Clooney “the best” director that he has ever worked with, ahead of the release of the pair’s latest collaboration, The Tender Bar. Throughout his career, Affleck has worked with some of the most lauded directors in the movie business, including David Fisher, Gus Van Sant, and Zack Snyder. The 49-year-old actor recently starred in the sports drama The Way Back, directed by Gavin O’Connor, and is set to star in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, a film Affleck co-wrote with close friend and Good Will Hunting co-writer, Matt Damon.

Affleck’s penchant for working with friends stretches into his next project, The Tender Bar, directed by Clooney, with whom Affleck shares a long-time friendship. The film was adapted from the 2005 memoir of the same name written by J.R. Moehringer and tells the story of a young man seeking out potential father figures at his uncle’s bar. Affleck will play one of the titular characters, named Uncle Charlie. The Tender Bar is set to be released in Los Angeles and New York theaters on December 17, 2021 and will release in theaters nationwide on December 22, 2021. The movie will then premiere on Amazon Prime Video globally on January 7, 2022. It also stars Tye Sheridan, Lily Rabe, and Christopher Lloyd.

Speaking to ET during the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Affleck said he considers Clooney to be the best director he’s ever worked with. He showered praises on the 60-year-old actor, stating that Clooney is the most “precise” director that Affleck knows, and that he fostered a “great environment” on set. Affleck said he considers Clooney’s work “a gift” and credits his talent to the vast experience he has had, both as an actor and director. Read Affleck’s full quote below:

“He’s just so good and so smart and creates a great environment. We had great experience working together previously, he produced Argo [with me]. He just has so much experience doing his thing, doing this job, and it’s like, such a gift. Because it cuts through all the noise and gets right to the x, y, z. Bing, bang, boom. He is the best, most precise director I’ve ever worked with.”

Despite being long-time friends, the two actors have yet to star in a movie opposite each other, having only previously worked together behind the scenes. Clooney was one of the producers in Argo, a film directed by Affleck that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2013. Affleck stated that he would “love to” act opposite Clooney saying that could be “the next step” in the actors’ working relationship. Clooney, however, doesn’t seem to be too excited at the prospect of acting opposite Affleck. In a separate interview to Entertainment Tonight, he jokingly said that Affleck is a “foot taller” than him and would make him “look like Mickey Rooney” if they were to stand next to each other. Clooney also joked that it would be “too much sexy” for one film, referring to the fact that both actors have previously been nominated as People’s Sexiest Man Alive.

Both Affleck and Clooney are A-list actors who’ve become successful directors. The level of expertise and quality work is certainly a factor that positively colored Affleck’s experience with Clooney as a director in The Tender Bar. It is possible that their close friendship also played a role in developing the good experience that Affleck had on set. In addition to their talent and name recognition, Affleck and Clooney’s friendship may be one of the big draws audiences will have to the film, especially if they continue to discuss their working relationship in subsequent interviews. Doing so may be a smart move, as it can generate greater interest and help make The Tender Bar a success for all involved.
