Actress Billie Lourd posted a moving tribute to her mother, Carrie Fisher, on Wednesday to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Fisher’s death. Shockwaves were felt across the entertainment industry on December 27, 2016, when Fisher passed away at age 60 in Los Angeles following a heart attack on an inbound flight from London. Compounding the tragedy, Fisher’s mother and Lourd’s grandmother, screen legend Debbie Reynolds, passed away a day after her daughter.
The loss of Fisher immediately presented a quandary for Disney and Lucasfilm, who had Fisher cast in all three films in the new Star Wars trilogy. With her role unaltered, Fisher gave what she didn’t know would be her final big screen performance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was made all the more poignant with a tribute to Princess-turned-General Leia icon in the end credits. Now, one year after Fisher’s passing, family, close friends and industry colleagues are paying tribute to the acclaimed actress, screenwriter and author.

Without question, the most stirring tribute came from Lourd, who took to her Instagram to share a unique tribute to her mother. The two photos depict Lourd and Austen Rydell under the Northern Lights. In the post’s caption Lourd says her “momby” had an “otherworldly obsession” with the Northern Lights, but they never viewed them together. See Lourd’s post below:

As funny as Lourd’s post is, it’s also very emotional, and no doubt probably one of the most difficult things the third-generation actress has ever written. Still, fans are bound to benefit from Lourd’s courage, yet not by lamenting the death of her mother, but her mother’s zest for life. It’s not only Fisher’s movies and words that will keep the legendary entertainer’s spirit alive, but stories from the likes of her daughter that will make some people laugh and some people cry, and some people both.
In addition to Lourd, others posted tributes to Fisher online. Fisher’s close friend and Star Wars’ co-star Mark Hamill, who took a emotional if not prophetic line from The Last Jedi, wrote in a tweet, “No one’s ever really gone…”
In the end, fans no matter how they respond will undoubtedly feel blessed that somebody as talented as Fisher was there to entertain them and help them to forget about the hardships of life, if only for a couple minutes or in the case of her Star Wars films, a couple hours at a time. Citing Rian Johnson’s words from The Last Jedi, Hamill’s observation on Twitter about Fisher was right. “No one’s ever really gone…,” and Lourd’s post is proof of that.
