Newly revealed concept art for Black Panther shows several different designs for T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) mask. After a brief tease in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where terms like Wakanda and vibranium were tossed around, T’Challa finally made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa played a pivotal role in that film, which made his solo appearance two years later even more thrilling for audiences. Black Panther was an instant hit with fans and critics alike, scoring excellent reviews on the way to becoming the highest-grossing MCU solo film.

Black Panther eventually made history by becoming the first comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In total, Black Panther racked up six nominations and managed to win three. Two of those three wins were for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, further proving how much work was put in to make the characters and their world come alive. Director Ryan Coogler and his team turned Wakanda from a fantasy world to a vibrant place that felt incredibly real, and that’s largely thanks to the sets and the costumes.

By now, fans are very familiar with how T’Challa’s Black Panther suit looks, but early designs for his mask show different directions things could have gone in. Marvel concept artist Andy Park shared them on social media and explained they were for both Black Panther and Civil War. Check them out below and see if you can find all the small details.

T’Challa’s next solo adventure, Black Panther 2, is currently slated for release in May 2022. This will be over four years after his first film, which feels like a rather long wait for fans. Most likely, Marvel is eager to replicate the success of Black Panther, but also wants to put in the time to make sure the sequel is of the same quality. Reports suggest Black Panther 2 will begin filming in early 2021, a reasonable timeline for the 2022 release.

Exactly where Black Panther 2 will find T’Challa is unclear. When fans last saw him, he had just come back to life in Avengers: Endgame and joined the battle to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin). Presumably, T’Challa will have reclaimed the throne of Wakanda, but he has also been dead for five years. Who was ruling Wakanda during that time? That’s one of the many questions on fans’ minds, and they’re eager for Black Panther 2 to answer them. Only time will tell if that film is as good as the first Black Panther, though with Coogler and Boseman back on board, it seems to be in good hands.
