Civilization 6 Best Mods for 2020 (& How to Install Them)

Civilization 6 has had several expansions during its four-year life span: Rise & Fall, Gathering Storm, and the ongoing New Frontier expansions. They’ve all introduced a plethora of new civilizations to play as, creative game mechanics and modes to try out, and continuous updates and balances. However, if players are looking for additional ways to spice up their Civ games, then they can always download free mods off the Steam workshop for even more variety.

The Civilization community has many creative programmers that have brought their ideas to life. Any player that has Civilization 6 on Steam can browse mods on the Steam Workshop and add them to their game. For those that have the game on the Epic store, they’ll have to manually move the mod files into Civilization 6’s mod folder. Because mods are linked to the Steam Workshop, the other versions of Civilization 6, the console releases, cannot support mods. Here’s a list of the best mods for Civilization 6, and who created them.

Civilization 6’s Best Mods

  • Civilization 5 Environment Skin – This popular mod alters the game’s look to appear like the game’s predecessor, Civilization 5. For those who prefer the previous entry’s style, are looking to indulge in nostalgia, or want a fresh coat of paint for their world, check out this fantastic mod by GrrrArrrg. Not only does it change the colors of the biomes, but the forests and jungles are a lot denser than Civ 6’s.
  • Prismatic – Each Civilization is represented by a 2 color combo so they can be told apart. Civilization 6 introduced a jersey system that lets players pick from 4 different combinations of colors, but the Prismatic mod by Seeling Cat adds even more. Specifically, Prismatic adds entirely new colors to the code that make even more distinct color combinations.
  • Global Relations Panel – This excellent mod by Sukritact creates an easier way to view international relations. Each leader has a line connected to every other leader, with the color of said line denoting their relationship status. At a glance, players can evaluate their world’s current political scale. Knowing that a potential ally is at war with a neighbor might delay the alliance, and this mod helps visualize that information more clearly than before.
  • Civilizations Expanded – An ambitious project made by a collective of well-known programmers, this mod enhances all Civilizations in the game to be more viable. Every single leader and civilization is given new abilities, and some are overhauled completely to the point of feeling like completely different civilizations. For those looking for a change of pace, check out this extensive mod. However, unlike the other mods, Civilizations Expanded requires all of the DLC to function.
  • Iceland – Sukritact is one of Civilization 6’s most competent modders, and the new civilizations and leaders they add to the game are of such high quality in both their creativity and presentation, they’re indistinguishable from civilizations already in the game; they’re even 3D animated! One of their best additions is Iceland, led by Ingolfur Amarson. This Civilization can make it’s cities and their districts stronger around Natural Wonders and has scouts and settlers with higher mobility.
  • Maximilian Robespierre – Another one of Sukritact’s mods, this time an alternate leader for France. This ruthless leader from the French revolution grants bonuses to gold and production to his country’s cultural centers, in exchange for loyalty penalties. Players looking for a unique high risk, high reward game style should definitely check out this mod.
  • Grand Canyon – Modders like Sukritact have also made new natural wonders for the game. This iconic American landmark looks great in Civilization 6, and grants bonuses to culture and gold. Also be sure to check out their Mt Fuji, Great Blue Hole, and others!
  • Perfect World 6 – Lastly, we have an excellent world-building mod by ricardo and p0kiehl. Using an advanced world generation code, Perfect World 6 creates worlds with more realistic proportions. For instance, rivers now follow more accurate drainage paths, Natural Wonders are positioned better, and biomes are in more geographically accurate locations.
