While both are must-watch parts of Star Wars canon, Star Wars Rebels is a far better animated series than Star Wars: The Clone Wars. George Lucas had long hoped to expand the Star Wars franchise, and in 2008 his dreams became a reality. Fans were finally able to experience the Clone Wars in all their tragedy, in a story that initially proved controversial but soon won people over.

Since then, there have been a regular stream of Lucasfilm animations, set in various time periods. But the two most prominent are still Star Wars: The Clone Wars and its spiritual successor, Star Wars Rebels, which launched in 2014. There are close ties between the two shows, with Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni using Star Wars Rebels to tie up a lot of loose ends left by the abrupt cancellation of The Clone Wars. Still, there’s naturally intense debate in the fandom as to which of the two is better.

Neither show should be considered weak; they’re both tremendous, and worthy additions to the Star Wars lore. The stronger, though, is certainly Star Wars Rebels. Principally, this is because Dave Filoni and the creative team had learned a lot of important lessons from The Clone Wars. The stories were generally more confident, the characterization was more consistent, and – most importantly – there is a strong sense of narrative flow. This is lacking in The Clone Wars, because George Lucas chose to tell that story out of sequence, making it quite difficult to initially get a sense of flow. Lucasfilm has openly acknowledged this problem, even publishing an official Clone Wars viewing order that helps correct this critical mistake.

While both shows have Darth Maul, Star Wars Rebels benefits from other classic villains. By season 2, the Rebels are being pursued by Darth Vader himself, who has learned his former Padawan Ahsoka Tano is still alive. Rebels shows Darth Vader at his best (or, perhaps, his worst) – an almost unconquerable foe who seems frankly irredeemable. The writers and showrunners could have decided to set up Vader’s redemption arc in Return of the Jedi, but instead they chose to show Darth Vader as the Emperor and the Empire saw him: a titan of the dark side, a man who truly believed he had cut off all ties to his past. Meanwhile, after Darth Vader, Rebels draws one of the best antagonists from the old Expanded Universe back into the canon – Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Chiss master strategist created by Timothy Zahn. He is as compelling in animated form as he is on the printed page.

Finally, Star Wars Rebels has the single best episode of Lucasfilm animation to date in “Twin Suns.” This is the final duel between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it is a masterpiece of characterization and animated work. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s fighting style alone shows remarkable attention to detail, because the animators show him switch from Ewan McGregor’s prequel trilogy style to the one displayed by Alec Guinness in the first Star Wars movie. As good as The Clone Wars may be – especially season 7 – it has nothing to compare to “Twin Suns.”
