The Karate Kid story continues to heat up with the release of Cobra Kai. The drama hits a shocking climax at the end of each season and has drastic repercussions for every character in the story. By extension, that means an even more intense rivalry between the Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do Karate dojos.

In between seasons, there’s a good opportunity to recap the fighter roster on both sides to determine who the strongest fighters are. Whether fans are rooting for Cobra Kai or for Miyagi-Do, these are the best of the best who will continue to drive the action forward with some brand new brawls.

Updated on March 15th, 2021 by Kristen Palamara: Cobra Kai continues to be an engaging show that continues the original story of the 80s martial arts Karate Kid movies. Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso brought back the Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do feud thirty years after the first movie. Although it looks like Johnny and Daniel might have finally put their personal feud behind them after the end of the third season John Kreese is still a foe to them both and the feud between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-do is going strong and there are strong fighters on both sides.

14 (Honorable Mention) Miyagi-Do: Mr. Miyagi

Mr. Miyagi only appears in the original movies and while there won’t be new footage of him in Cobra Kai since actor Pat Morita passed away he still has a strong presence in the show. Mr. Miyagi is a great fighter as seen in The Karate Kid movies who focuses more on deliberate actions and pressure points instead of brute force and strength.

Mr. Miyagi’s ability to teach his family’s karate is proven in Daniel’s fighting ability and his daughter Sam’s technique as well as Chozen who was taught Miyagi-do karate in Okinawa.

13 (Honorable Mention) Cobra Kai: Terry Silver

Terry Silver hasn’t appeared in Cobra Kai, yet, but the third season suggested that the Karate Kid Part III character might be returning to the story. Terry Silver and John Kreese have a history together and teamed up to torment Daniel and Mr. Miyagi throughout the third movie.

He’s a strong and ruthless fighter, similar to Kreese, who Daniel turns to when Mr. Miyagi refuses to train Daniel for the upcoming tournament. Terry manipulates Daniel into thinking he’s a good guy, but secretly he’s working with Kreese and most likely he’ll return to help his old war buddy in the Netflix series.

12 Cobra Kai: Tory Nichols

Tory appeared in season 2 of Cobra Kai and immediately showed that she was a natural fighter who already had basic skills in how to defend herself and attack when she needed to. She’s a strong and ruthless fighter who seems to have fallen in line with John Kreese’s Cobra Kai after the end of season 3.

Tory will only become stronger after Kreese’s tough training. She is a skilled fighter who doesn’t hesitate when she’s in a fight especially if she’s going after her enemy Sam LaRusso.

11 Miyagi-Do: Chozen

Cobra Kai Vs MiyagiDo The 7 Best Fighters On Each Side

Chozen appeared as Daniel’s enemy in Karate Kid Part II and returned in Cobra Kai season 3 when Daniel traveled to Okinawa. Kumiko called Chozen when she ran into Daniel and the two overcame their old rivalry as Chozen agreed to teach Daniel more Miyagi-do.

Chozen is a stronger fighter than Daniel as he almost bested him in the movie and easily bested him when they sparred in the show. Chozen has a similar fighting style to Mr. Miyagi and a similar way of teaching as he forces Daniel to have the patience to learn the secrets of Miyagi-do karate.

10 Miyagi-Do: Chris

Chris started out as a Cobra Kai initiate, but he quickly became disillusioned with the school’s brutal fighting style, especially under the influence of John Kreese. He decided to switch sides and head over to Miyagi-Do just as Daniel was struggling with whether to throw in the towel or not.

His friend Mitch stayed with Cobra Kai which created an intense rivalry between the two. They finally collided in the final episode of season 2 during the school brawl where Chris was able to defeat Mitch and demonstrate the superiority of a more balanced style of karate.

9 Cobra Kai: Aisha

Aisha represents every high school girl who has been bullied for not being the prettiest, thinnest, or most popular. As such, her path towards Cobra Kai seemed inevitable as she became sick and tired of being laughed at and bullied by her peers. Within Johnny Lawrence’s dojo, Aisha was able to awake her inner snake and become a confident fighter all her own.

It remains to be seen where Aisha’s path will take her following the devastating end of season 2 and not appearing in season 3, but it’s clear she has a lot of soul-searching to do. In the meantime, expect to see her at the forefront of Cobra Kai’s most elite students.

8 Miyagi-Do: Demetri

Demetri is an unsung hero in his own right, especially after his dismal introduction to karate. His neurotic ways got him kicked out of Cobra Kai almost immediately, only to dump himself on Daniel LaRusso’s doorstep. It was there that Daniel had to navigate through Demetri’s insufferable character flaws and pretentious antics before he got to the fighter inside.

His rivalry with his former best friend Hawk got the better of him near the end of season 2 when the two finally squared off. While Hawk would have been the victor due to his brutal Cobra Kai training, Demetri managed to conquer his fears and rely on his teachings to put Hawk down for the count.

7 Cobra Kai: John Kreese

John Kreese is the man who kicked off the path of self-destruction and violence that became synonymous with Cobra Kai. This former combat vet has all the training necessary to go toe-to-toe in a fight with the absolute best, and old age hasn’t slowed him down one bit.

Though Kreese is largely a figurehead in the Cobra Kai circle, he’s clearly one of, if not the most, dangerous karate practitioners in the story.

6 Miyagi-Do: Samantha LaRusso

Sam is just like any other popular, girl-next-door teenager type who just happens to have been taught karate at a young age by a certified expert. Though she at first regarded karate as a vestigial remnant of her pre-pubescent childhood, she’s since come around to training more fully under her father Daniel’s tutelage, and has managed to kick butt as a result.

In fact, she’s probably on par with Daniel’s greatest student thus far, Robby Keene. The two have trained as an inseparable pair and managed to develop a coordinated fighting style that is capable of taking on multiple attackers at once without suffering defeat.

5 Cobra Kai: Hawk

Eli Moskowitz’s story is absolutely heartbreaking, especially for anyone who went through merciless bullying and taunting for having a physical disfigurement. His self-confidence was pulverized almost to the point of no return, and if left unchecked, could have led to anything from severe social anxiety disorder to suicide.

Johnny Lawrence was unsympathetic to Eli when he walked into Cobra Kai, but he also presented him an opportunity to “flip the script” and become powerful. As his training grew, so too did his confidence. Hawk is now the second-best of the Cobra Kai initiates, but his pent-up rage from years of bullying has been amplified by John Kreese’s rhetoric a hundred times over.

4 Miyagi-Do: Robby Keene

Robby Keene went from being a hated character to a beloved one in a relatively short space of time. All it took was the tutelage and confidence of Daniel LaRusso to bring out the good kid inside. Robby’s only weakness is his anger towards his father Johnny Lawrence, a wound that keeps trying to heal— albeit unsuccessfully.

Robby’s anger got the best of him at the end of season 2 when he kicked Miguel over a railing and put him in a serious coma. Before that, he was undoubtedly the strongest Miyagi-Do student ever to have walked into Daniel’s life and looks like he might be switching to Cobra Kai after the end of season 3.

3 Cobra Kai: Miguel Diaz

Cobra Kai Vs MiyagiDo The 7 Best Fighters On Each Side

Miguel started off as a good kid who just wanted to make it through the day on a positive note. Unfortunately, he became the victim of bullying despite his refusal to look the other way at injustice. Johnny Lawrence took him under his wing as the very first student under the reformed Cobra Kai roof.

Miguel quickly became like a son to Johnny at a time when his Johnny’s own child, Robby, hated his guts. This would end up sparking an intense rivalry between the two for the affections of Samantha. Miguel came back from the brink of merciless rage at the end of season 2 and is now in a coma because of it. His path to balance will be difficult, but with Johnny’s training, he might just pull it off.

2 Miyagi-Do: Daniel LaRusso

Cobra Kai Vs MiyagiDo The 7 Best Fighters On Each Side

Karate Kid fans know Daniel LaRusso as the original everyday kid who suffered at the hands of his school bullies. Having grown up without a father, Daniel’s frustration and rage could have led him down an extremely dangerous path, but the wisdom of Mr. Miyagi brought him back from the precipice towards a life of balance and harmony.

His training was a mixture of technique and philosophy that helped him win the All Valley tournament against Johnny Lawrence, which set him up for success later in life. Daniel is now learning that balance is a battle which must be fought for every single day. In a fight, he’s immensely knowledgeable and able to defend himself against the best.

1 Cobra Kai: Johnny Lawrence

Audiences loved to hate Johnny Lawrence, the insufferable bully from the first Karate Kid film. However, the Cobra Kai series has managed to shed some light on Johnny’s past, and it turns out he wasn’t always the cruel kid he was portrayed as in the original movie.

Johnny’s willingness to risk everything for the sake of success with Cobra Kai is mirrored by his martial arts prowess. Despite being out of practice, he was easily able to subdue several opponents before opening up his dojo and winning the All Valley Tournament. He even settled an old score with John Kreese within the walls of Cobra Kai and proved he had what it took to take down his old teacher, and he might be moving on beyond Cobra Kai after the third season.
