Death Road To Canada has been delayed in the wake of Monday’s tragedy in Toronto.

It’s a rare thing for a game to be released because of something that happened in the real world, but occasionally the depressing facts of life rear their ugly heads and stop the rest of us from having a good ‘ol time.

Take Death Road To Canada, a 2D action zombie survival game that is just trying to poke a little fun at both Canada and the zombie survival genre in general. The game describes itself as a “Randomly Generated Road Trip Simulator” where “you control and manage a car full of jerks as they explore cities, recruit weird people, argue with each other, and face gigantic swarms of slow zombies.”

Think Dead Rising, only in a pixelated, two-dimensional world. Also, everything about the game is randomly generated–from the number of zombies on screen (which can eventually reach 500) to the environments and even to the player’s appearance. There’s also random loot as well which provide sweet abilities.

Mega Man makes an appearance, although we’re not totally clear on whether the developers got permission from Capcom on that one.

The game is already released on PC and iOS, and was set to release on PlayStation and Xbox consoles on Wednesday, April 25th. Unfortunately, that’s merely two days after a man decided to rent a truck in Toronto, hop the curb, and then mercilessly mow down 24 pedestrians. Ten people died as a result of the attack.

For a game called Death Road To Canada, there are a few too many parallels to draw. Worse still, you can mow down hundreds of zombies from the driver’s seat of your van.

As a result, London-based Ukiyo Publishing decided to hold off on the wider console release of Death Road To Canada, announcing a respectful delay via Twitter.

“Due to the tragic events that happened in Toronto yesterday, we felt that now wouldn’t be the right time to release Death Road to Canada, so we have put the release on hold for now,” the publisher wrote.

“We apologize to all the fans and our condolences to those affected by the events.”

No word on the new release date, but expect it to wait a few months at least. And to all those affected by the tragedy that struck Toronto on Monday, TheGamer offers our sincerest condolences.
