The bottom of the Super Mario Bros. franchise barrel has well and truly been scraped, as one of the next characters coming to Dr. Mario World is Dr. Dolphin, who performs medicine despite lacking hands or the ability to breathe on land.

The dolphins of the Super Mario Bros. universe debuted in Super Mario World, where they were the result of censorship outside of Japan. In the original version of the game, it was possible for Yoshi to eat the dolphins, despite the fact that they are friends of Mario, and they are used as platforms when crossing bodies of water. This ability was restored in the Game Boy Advance version of the game. The dolphins have since had appearances in the Mario Party series, as well as the Mario Golf and Mario Kart games.

The time has come for one of the dolphins to become a playable character in the Super Mario Bros. series. A new post on the Dr. Mario World Twitter page has announced that Dr. Dolphin will be added to the game on May 28. A dolphin already exists as an assistant character in the game, but this one has earned its medical license.

Dr. Dolphin isn’t the only new doctor coming to the game, as Dr. Koopa Troopa will also be arriving on May 28. A new set of summer-themed stages will also be arriving on the same day.

Dr. Mario World has had some strange choices for doctors so far, which have included three Goombas in a coat, baby versions of the main characters, Donkey Kong, an undead version of Bowser, and Waluigi. The game really needs to start including characters from other Nintendo franchises at some point, before we get to the point where Dr. Wart, Dr. Birdo, and Dr. Phanto are part of the game. (That last part was a complete lie, Dr. Mario World would become GOTY if it added Super Mario Bros. 2 characters to the game).
