Former Dancing With The Stars runner-up Joey Fatone is recalling the firing of longtime host Tom Bergeron, describing it as “weird.” The NSYNC singer competed on the ballroom competition series nearly 14 years ago during season 4. He came just shy of winning the Mirrorball Trophy, ultimately coming in second place. Despite his time on the show being so many years ago, Joey has some strong feelings about Tom’s removal from the show last season.

Tom was the host of DWTS since the show’s start in 2005. In 2014, Erin Andrews, who had previously competed on the show in 2010, joined the cast as Tom’s new co-host. Prior to the start of season 29 in 2020, longtime fans of the show were left shocked and disappointed when it was announced that neither Tom nor Erin would be returning to the ballroom for the new season. The two fan-favorites were replaced by model Tyra Banks on DWTS.

While the details surrounding their departure from the show remain quite vague, it is perceived that Tom and Erin were ultimately fired. Just like the news was both shocking and confusing to fans, it was the same feeling for former contestants as well. Joey told Us Weekly that Tom being fired from his DWTS hosting position was “weird.” He said, “I haven’t had a chance to talk to Tom because I don’t really know what happened. That was just weird how it all went down.” He has nothing against new host Tyra or Tom’s former co-host Erin, but like many viewers, Joey truly feels that Tom was the “backbone” of the show.

Not only was Tom on the show from the start, but he was also “great” at hosting. Because of this, Joey does not necessarily agree with ABC’s claim that the show needed a change. While Joey did not fully understand why the network felt the need to make such a large change to the show, he did say, “I don’t know why they did, but they do what they have to do, and maybe they wanted to go in a different direction.” At the time the news broke of Tom and Erin’s split from the show, ABC had claimed that the change in host was due to their decision to move in a “new creative direction” on DWTS.

Despite much disappointment, many fans truly believe Tom will never return to the ballroom to take back his former hosting gig; however, Tom is allegedly working on a new hosting project. The details of his new position remain unknown, but Tom has continued to drop hints on social media. Originally, his followers thought he was making a return to the show. Tom quickly shut down these rumors. Tyra will in fact continue hosting Dancing With The Stars for the show’s milestone 30th season. The dancing competition series is set to return sometime in the fall.
