Merchandise for Marvel’s Eternals hints at the Black Knight – and a superpower possessed by the ancient aliens that hasn’t yet been teased. Back in August 2019, Marvel Studios confirmed that Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington had joined Eternals as Dane Whitman. Comic book readers were delighted, because they knew Dane Whitman is the alter ego of the Black Knight, one of Marvel’s classic (albeit lesser-known) heroes.

But it’s gradually becoming clear there was a reason Marvel didn’t name-drop the Black Knight himself. Speaking at set visits in January 2020, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore confirmed Dane Whitman won’t become the Black Knight in Eternals, and in fact his fabled Ebony Blade – the Black Knight’s trademark weapon – won’t even appear in the film. Marvel clearly has a long-term plan for Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman, intending Eternals to introduce him as a character and gradually take him on a Hero’s Journey of some sort.

New Eternals merchandise strongly hints there will be overt references to the Black Knight, however. A UK and Europe exclusive for Zavvi offers a number of items in honor of the film including:

  • An adjustable Black Knight ring
  • Sersi’s necklace, made of natural azurite with a lobster clasp
  • An adjustable Thena’s tiara
  • A hinged Uni-Mind bracelet

The items are clearly taken from the film itself, making the Black Knight’s ring and the Uni-Mind bracelet particularly interesting. The insignia on the ring is the one traditionally worn on the breastplate of every incarnation of the Black Knight; there have long been rumors such a ring would appear in Eternals, a family heirloom possessed by Whitman, and this seems to confirm them. Because the Eternals were sent to Earth by the Celestials 7,000 years ago, it’s possible they have encountered previous iterations of the Black Knight, so they may well know more about this insignia than Dane Whitman himself does.

Meanwhile, the reference to the Uni-Mind suggests the Eternals may possess a comic book power that allows them to combine their mental energies as a sort of “ultimate weapon.” The Eternals seem to have separated centuries ago, so — assuming they are aware they possess this ability — they wouldn’t have practiced it for quite some time; this could be an important plot point, because in the comics the Uni-Mind helps protect Eternals from “Mahd Wy’ry,” the dementia-like illness Thena will be suffering from in the film. Her failure to join in the Uni-Mind for centuries may be a major reason for the illness, but an experience of the Uni-Mind — perhaps during the final third-act battle against Kro, leader of the Deviants — could potentially restore her mind. There’s been no obvious nod towards the Uni-Mind in the Eternals trailers, so clearly Marvel still has a lot of surprises in store.
