It’s been almost sixteen years since the Firefly cast last joined together for Serenity, and while the show’s stars will always be associated with short-lived space western, they’ve also gone on to work on numerous other projects since. Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, and the rest of the crew have fanned out into the world of film and television since Firefly’s premature end, bringing their talents to many stories over the past decade and a half. But what exactly have they all been up to?

The saga of Firefly is one of the most interesting in modern television history, due to its nearly unparalleled fan following, incredibly short run, and odd studio decisions that sabotaged the series from the start. Firefly’s episodes were aired out of order on Fox, and disagreements between the writers and the studio over aspect ratio and scripts forced some unfortunate compromises on the creative end. Infamously, Firefly was then canceled after one season. Even still, the show has accrued and maintained a massive fan base since it ended, and an expansive media universe of comics, novels, and the sequel film Serenity has thrived in its wake.

Of course, Firefly wouldn’t have been the cult-hit it was without the exceptional talent and chemistry of its spacefaring ensemble. The series’ large cast opened up a web of compelling character relationships that drew viewers into the world of Firefly, and the actors who brought those characters to life formed one of the most fiercely beloved and disappointingly short-lived groups in recent TV history. Here’s what the stars of Firefly have done since the sky was taken from them.

Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Malcom Reynolds on Firefly, has had a prolific career since the end of the series. Most notably, he’s landed leading roles on two other primetime TV shows – Castle, which ran for eight seasons on ABC, and The Rookie, which currently airs on ABC. Fillion has also done a good bit of voice acting work, including multiple entries in the popular Halo video games and numerous animated DC comics films playing the Green Lantern. In 2018, Fillion starred in a short Uncharted fan film, portraying the Nathan Drake character that many believe was based on him. He has also collaborated several times with James Gunn, having cameos in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, starring in the cult-classic horror film Slither, and featuring in The Suicide Squad.

Gina Torres

Firefly’s Zoe Washburne is one of many, many TV characters Gina Torres has brought to life over the course of her career. Her most prominent role since has been Jessica Pearson on Suits, one of the key players of the popular legal drama. Torres starred in the spinoff series Pearson, which ran for a single season. Torres has featured in dozens of other shows, including Criminal Minds, Westworld, The Shield, and Hannibal. She has also done voice work on series like Star Wars: Rebels, where she played Ketsu Onyo, Transformers: Prime, and Justice League Unlimited. Torres also featured in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as Cas.

Alan Tudyk

Aside from his role as Hoban Washburne on Firefly, Alan Tudyk is perhaps most famous for his appearances in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story as Steve the Pirate and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil as the eponymous Tucker. Tudyk has appeared in other major films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and he currently stars as Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle on Syfy’s Resident Alien. In 2019, he played the villainous Mr. Nobody on the DC Universe show Doom Patrol. Tudyk has also worked prolifically as a voice actor, especially for Walt Disney Animation Studios. He has played numerous supporting characters in Disney films over the past decade, including the Duke of Weselton in Frozen, King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph (for which he won an Annie Award), and Alistair Krei in Big Hero 6.

Morena Baccarin

After playing Inara Serra on Firefly, Morena Baccarin has played major roles in several blockbuster films and TV series. She played Vanessa Carlysle in both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 and had a leading role as Cristina Ferrare in the 2019 film Framing John DeLorean alongside Alec Baldwin. On the television side, Baccarin has played Jessica Brody on Homeland (for which she received an Emmy nomination) and Leslie Thompkins on Gotham. She’s also voiced the A.I. Gideon on The Flash, among other supporting and guest roles. Baccarin voiced Black Canary on Justice League Unlimited and has done extensive voice work in several other films and series as well.

Adam Baldwin

Adam Baldwin’s most iconic film role came years before his turn as Jayne Cobb on Firefly, when he played Sergeant “Animal Mother” in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. Baldwin already had an impressive resume to his name when he was cast as Jayne, and he’s continued that track record since, landing leading roles as Colonel John Casey on Chuck and Captain Mike Slattery on The Last Ship. Baldwin has also had numerous smaller roles in film, television, and as a voice actor, including a guest spot on Castle and playing characters in Mass Effect 2 and the Halo franchise.

Jewel Staite

Jewel Staite worked extensively as a young actress before her time playing Kaylee Frye on Firefly, and she’s continued her TV prominence since. Staite’s most notable television roles since Kaylee include Jennifer Keller on Stargate: Atlantis, Caroline Swift in AMC’s The Killing, and Raquel Westbrook in the Canadian drama series The L.A. Complex. She has appeared in minor roles on many other shows, including Supernatural, Castle, Legends of Tomorrow, The Good Doctor, and The Magicians.

Sean Maher

Since playing Dr. Simon Tam on Firefly, Sean Maher has appeared in a range of films, shows, and animated projects. He featured in Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing alongside Nathan Fillion, and has had guest spots on popular series like Warehouse 13, CSI: Miami, and The Mentalist. He played the role of Sean Beasley in The Playboy Club and appeared as DC villain Shrapnel on Arrow. Maher has voiced Dick Grayson in numerous DC animated projects since 2014.

Summer Glau

Summer Glau’s performance as River Tam on Firefly is just one of many sci-fi outings for the actress. Since the series’ sudden conclusion, Glau has played several prominent TV roles in the genre, including Tess Doerner in The 4400, Cameron in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Bennett Halverson on Dollhouse, Ravager in Arrow, and Miss Jones in Wu Assassins. She has also had larger roles on shows like The Cape and Sequestered, and minor appearances on Chuck, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, and more.

Ron Glass

Ron Glass was a fan-favorite as Shepherd Book on Firefly, and while the actor continued working in film and television afterward, he passed away in 2016 at the age of 71. As the oldest member of the Firefly cast, Glass had already led an impressive acting career by the time he played Book. He portrayed Detective Ron Harris on Barney Miller and appeared in numerous classic shows, including Sanford and Son, Hawaii Five-O, Family Matters, and Star Trek: Voyager. After the end of Firefly, Glass performed in films like Lakeview Terrace and Death at a Funeral, and series like CSI, Major Crimes, and Agents of SHIELD.

Other Notable Firefly Actors

In addition to the core cast, Firefly featured several guest stars who’ve since gone on to enjoy prolific careers. Most notably, Christina Hendricks – who played the Firefly con artist Saffron on two episodes of the series – later shot to stardom for her performance of Joan Holloway on Mad Men, for which she won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and was nominated for six Emmy Awards. Hendricks currently stars in the NBC series Good Girls as money launderer Beth Boland. Sci-fi veteran Mark Sheppard also appeared on Firefly as the shady underworld figure Badger, later going on to play Crowley on Supernatural and appear in dozens of other popular shows.
