The recent holiday marathon for Gilmore Girls that aired on UpTV has reinvigorated a passion for the famous mother and daughter duo for many fans of the show. In over 150 episodes, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore endeared themselves to a devoted audience who loved their witty banter, breathless pop culture references, and strong mother/daughter relationship that was rare to see on broadcast television at that time.

Over the course of the series, fans loved to see how Lorelai and, in particular, Rory grew from the first season to the last. When seeing a young Rory in the first season episodes of the show, she seems like a completely different person in comparison to the Rory that fans see in the show’s finale. Consequently, there are things that the old Rory would love about the new Rory, and things she wouldn’t be as fond of.

Things Season 1 Rory Would Love:

Her Relationship With Her Mom Is Just As Strong

It’s no secret that Lorelai and Rory are not only mother and daughter, but also best friends. It’s clear in season 1 that the two have a very special bond, and Rory and Lorelai have a lot more trust and friendship than most other mothers and daughters on the show.

In season 7, even though Rory has left the nest and is about to head out on her own in the real world, her and Lorelai’s relationship is still strong. They are still as close as ever, and the closing shot of the series is even the two having breakfast at Luke’s.

She Graduated From An Ivy League University

Season 1 Rory is very passionate about education. Her academics are one of the most important things in her life and her dream is to attend an Ivy League school. Fans can see right from the beginning that her walls are littered with university posters and pennants.

Now, she would perhaps be surprised that the school Rory ends up attending is Yale and not Harvard, but she would be very proud of her future self and her accomplishments. It was her biggest dream and goal put into reality.

She Was About To Start A High-Profile Journalism Job

Although many Redditors think Mitchum was right in Gilmore Girls about journalism not being the greatest fit for Rory, and posit that she should have tried book writing, she did obtain a lucrative journalism job with the Obama campaign at the end of the series.

Rory worked tirelessly to become a journalist, and getting an incredible opportunity like covering a presidential campaign would make season 1 Rory scream with joy. Furthermore, she would be covering a subject, President Obama, who genuinely inspired her and shared many of her same liberal beliefs and passions.

She Has A Genuine Friendship With Paris

In the first few seasons of Gilmore Girls, Rory’s relationship with Paris had a lot of animosity and general tension. The two are in constant competition and get on each others’ nerves a lot, especially in season 1.

By the time of season 7, Rory and Paris are genuine friends and really care about each other. Paris was there for Rory, keeping Logan at the door after one of their messy breakups, the two went on a spring break trip together, and Rory comforted Paris after Asher’s passing.

She Helped Bring Her Mother And Grandmother Closer Together

Season 1 Rory only knew Emily and Lorelai to be passive-aggressive and manipulative with each other. They were constantly at odds, although many Redditors think Lorelai and Emily are much more alike than the two women think they are.

One of the main things that bring Emily and Lorelai together is their love and support for Rory. The bond that Rory shares with both of them strengthened their relationship over the course of the show, and by season 7, Lorelai chooses to continue having Friday Night Dinners, even though Rory will be gone.

Things Season 1 Rory Would Hate:

Her Criminal Activity

Season 1 Rory is very straight-laced. She’s one of the most well-behaved teens on the show, and the thought of not getting extra credit is a crushing blow for the overachieving teen. She would never be a part of any delinquent behavior.

Season 7 Rory has made some less-than-admirable choices. To season 1 Rory’s horror, season 7 Rory has even been arrested and had to complete community service for some trouble that she got into with Logan.

She Lost Her Virginity To Dean While He Was Married

The relationship lines were always a little blurred for Rory. For example, she definitely began a romantic relationship with Jess while still dating Dean. Rory’s behavior with partners hasn’t aged very well, but sex was something that even early she knew was a big deal and should be with someone special.

Rory’s younger self would be disappointed in her later actions and how they played out, especially since Dean lied about his marriage ending and he and Rory didn’t even end up together. Her morality took a dip as seasons progressed, and season 1 Rory wouldn’t be a fan.

She Left School And Almost Didn’t Go Back

Education was always a very important part of Rory’s dreams and aspirations. She studied and worked very hard over many years to be able to be a successful student at an Ivy League school.

The idea of her taking a break from school would be strange enough to season 1 Rory, and even more bizarre would be the idea of dropping out altogether. But, that almost happened after Rory’s brush with the law and separation from Lorelai. While she eventually returned, her brief flirtation with a life sans an undergraduate degree and a clear path for the future would’ve disturbed the younger Rory, who was always so focused on following a clearly defined path that always involved college and graduate school.

She Worked For The D.A.R.

Rory has made some bad career decisions in Gilmore Girls, but working for the D.A.R. was completely against her plan. She was never someone who needed to be a part of fancy tea parties, luncheons, or charity events for the extremely wealthy. Her upbringing was humble and she knew the value of hard work, even if she took some of her privilege for granted sometimes.

The D.A.R. would be a foreign concept for season 1 Rory, and she would never picture herself working for them with Emily. She is an independent and academic girl, who wanted to write hard-hitting news articles instead of coordinating events–no matter how good at it she was.

She Turned Down Logan

Season 1 Rory was a romantic–she pictured sharing her life with that one special someone, even when Lorelai told her it would be smarter to focus on school and her future. The entire first episode revolves around Rory meeting Dean and wanting to date him even though it would take away from her studies.

By season 7, Rory has found one person who fans truly believe was her equal and soulmate. Logan lifted Rory up, took a genuine interest in her life, and would have done anything for her. He grew the most out of any of the characters on the show and did it all for love of Rory. Instead of embracing this love, she treated it as if it competed with her future, and that was the exact opposite of season 1 Rory’s belief.
