While the Harry Potter series might be extremely popular and well-loved by many fans, there are definitely some things about the series that are fairly problematic when you think about them. The series was written in the middle of the 90s, and J.K. Rowling has also said some troubling things herself that has given many fans pause, so there are many things about the series that aren’t perfect.

Perhaps one of the most problematic characters in the series is Severus Snape. While he gets a redemption arc, many fans feel that he didn’t deserve one, and these are some of the reasons why.

10 Favoring the Slytherins over everyone else

The Hogwarts professors are able to get away with a lot of things at Hogwarts and don’t seem to have to meet many requirements to teach. While some of the other professors also show favoritism, Snape is the worst of them all.

He is only really nice to the Slytherins and lets them get away with things that the others don’t.

9 Playing victim even though he was clearly into dark magic

One of the strange things about how Snape in his youth is presented in the series is that he seems like a victim. While he was abused by his father, and this is an awful thing, he was also a bit of a bully himself and was clearly into dark magic and bigotry.

So, the fact that the Marauders were mean to him makes sense, and yet he still thinks of himself as a victim in adulthood.

8 Calling Lily a Mudblood

The fact that Snape and Lily were such close friends, and yet he still called her a horrible slur in the wizarding world is extremely problematic.

Even though he himself knew that not all Muggle-borns were bad, he chose to align himself with horrible ideologies and calling Lily this was just the start of everything.

7 Creating Sectumsempra

This is another point that connects with the idea that Snape wasn’t just bullied but that he was also a cruel bully himself. He came up with a curse, all on his own, that was extremely violent.

This curse was meant to be used on enemies, and it would give them a cruel and bloody end. This shows the kind of things he was thinking about, and there’s something really messed up about it.

6 Bullying Hermione for her appearance

Snape might not have been supporting Voldemort by the time he was allowed to teach at Hogwarts, but he still did seem to have some prejudice toward Muggle-born students like Hermione.

He was also just a huge bully overall, and when he refused to send Hermione to the hospital wing and instead mocked her for her huge teeth, it was really pathetic. He was her professor and she was just a pre-teen, and he shouldn’t treat his students that way.

5 Hating Harry and trying to get him expelled

The hatred that Snape had toward Harry was pretty and ridiculous. While it might make sense that he wouldn’t love Harry given he was proof that Lily loved James, he didn’t need to be so mean about it.

He spent much of his time trying to get Harry Expelled despite the fact he was supposed to be helping Dumbledore protect him.

4 Telling everyone that Lupin was a werewolf

Snape’s anger over the Marauder’s and his belief that he was a victim caused him to still hate Lupin. He tried the entire year that Lupin was teaching to get the students to figure out he was a werewolf, and then after Sirius escaped, he revealed the news to the parents.

This was a gross thing to do as the hateful prejudice against werewolves made Lupin a target of bigotry. He was fine to mess with his livelihood and safety because of his issues.

3 Abusing his students, especially Neville

Snape was all around just a jerk. He treated others around him with disdain, and he only seemed to like a select few people, strangely only those who still had ties to the Death Eaters he said to have renounced.

While he was a bully to many of his students, he was particularly abusive to Neville to the point that Snape was Neville’s biggest fear. He even tried to make Neville poison his toad once.

2 Only caring if Snape killed Lily, not her husband and son

One of the most reprehensible and problematic things about Snape, that proves he shouldn’t have been so easily redeemed, is that he was fine with the death of an innocent baby.

While he didn’t want Lily to be killed by Voldemort, he had absolutely no moral issue with Voldemort killing James and Harry, who was barely one year old.

1 Becoming a Death Eater

There are many things that make Snape a problematic person, but the worst of them all is the fact that he chose to become a Death Eater. Not just that, but he was actually one of Voldemort’s most trusted and devoted followers.

If not for his own selfish love for Lily, he would have kept being fine with the murder and torture of innocent people.
