The Harry Potter franchise remains one of the most popular young adult book-series-to-movie adaptations today, thanks to its ensemble of interesting characters. Sure, there’s the titular character, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) himself, along with Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). But besides them, there are also several interesting supporting characters, including Ron’s older twin brothers, Fred (James Phelps) and George (Oliver Phelps).

Ever since the brothers were introduced in The Sorcerer’s Stone, fans wished they were given more screentime. More importantly, many would have loved the idea of turning them into main characters.

10 Should: They Have A Sense Of Humor

As far as pranksters at Hogwarts go, Fred and George top the list. These Weasley brothers certainly know how to have some fun and that remained evident throughout most of their time in the franchise.

In the beginning, they tried to get their mother (Julie Walters) to believe that she couldn’t tell apart her own sons. Much later, the brothers also put on their very own fireworks show while in the middle of their O.W.L. examinations. The fireworks also eventually transformed into a scary dragon, which drives the insufferable Professor Umbridge out of Hogwarts.

9 Shouldn’t: Their Back Story Isn’t As Interesting

The Weasleys are, arguably, the most popular family in the franchise (although the Malfoys may protest). After all, they are a huge bunch and Harry had grown close to the entire family over the years. That said, one can’t deny that the Weasley backstory is not as interesting as the Potter’s.

After all, they were not the ones who were assaulted, killed or hunted by Voldemort. Without a back story that is equally compelling, it’s hard to imagine Fred and George getting older and pursuing Voldemort across eight movies.

8 Should: They Are Older & Have More Wizarding Experience

By the time Harry, Ron, and Hermione attend Hogwarts, Fred and George had already been attending the school for quite some time. And since they have been studying wizardry for much longer, it is only reasonable to assume that they would know how to cast spells better.

In this case, the storylines featured in the books and franchise would have been more interesting if they had been the main characters. Not to mention, the fight scenes may have also been more intense and Voldemort may have been portrayed as an even more menacing adversary.

7 Shouldn’t: They Are Too Annoying To Be Main Characters

Over the years, the tandem of Fred and George Weasley has become popular among Harry Potter fans, even inspiring some hilarious memes. After seeing them pull off several pranks and make jokes about their siblings though, it’s quite hard to take them seriously.

Not to mention, being jokesters had also made them rather annoying. Because of this, it may be a challenge for viewers to become invested in the twins. And even if the stakes are high, fans may just think that the whole situation isn’t as dire as the film intends it to be portrayed.

6 Should: They Have Formidable Quidditch Skills

Whereas Harry became the Gryffindor Seeker, both Fred and George served as the team’s Beaters. Throughout the movie, we see the twins participate in various quidditch matches. Quidditch is obviously a cherished sport among wizards. Hence, wizards and witches who play for their house teams often command respect among their schoolmates.

Because of this, Fred and George would have been in the perfect position to gain main character status throughout the franchise. And if this had happened, there may have also been more quidditch matches in the movies too.

5 Shouldn’t: They Might Be Too Much For Snape And Dumbledore To Handle

Throughout the franchise’s run, Harry interacted often with Dumbledore (Richard Harris/Michael Gambon) and Snape (Alan Rickman). This is because both characters were critical to the main storyline of the franchise, specifically the one related to Voldemort.

If Fred and George were to take Harry’s place as the main character, then these boys would be the ones interacting with Dumbledore and Snape more often. And based on everything the audience has seen them do, it’s safe to say that these esteemed professors would have a hard time dealing with their mischief.

4 Should: They Have The Twin Appeal

Twin characters have a unique appeal, allowing filmmakers to explore various storylines, depending on the genre. Just look at films that revolve around twin characters, such as It Takes Two, The Parent Trap, and the Dead Ringer movies. In Harry Potter, Fred and George are shown as twins who do everything together.

They carry out pranks together, they play quidditch together, and in the franchise’s concluding film, they even fought side by side. Sadly, Fred Weasley would not survive the final big battle against Voldemort.

3 Shouldn’t: They Would Have Messed With The Triwizard Tournament Storyline Too Much

In Goblet of Fire, Harry finds himself participating in the prestigious (and incredibly dangerous) Triwizard Tournament after his name emerges from the Goblet of Fire. This was unexpected since older student/wizard Cedric Diggory had already been chosen to represent Hogwarts.

If the twins were to take Harry’s place as the main character, the tournament may become overcrowded with participants. At the same time, it would also be hard to explain why the Goblet of Fire would produce two additional names. That said, Fred and George were both eager to participate in the tournament at one point.

2 Should: It Would Have Been Nice To See Them Fight Voldemort Together

The Harry Potter storyline ends in a fight to the death between Harry Potter and Voldemort, one that occurs after Voldemort wrongly assumes that he had already killed Harry in the forest. Luckily, he hadn’t and Potter eventually manages to kill Voldemort himself.

Interestingly if George and Fred were the main characters, the two of them would be fighting Voldemort in one of the movie’s final scenes. That said, it would be interesting to see how Voldemort would manage to fight both wizards at the same time.

1 Shouldn’t: It Is Unclear If Voldemort Can Imprint Himself On Twins

In the Harry Potter movies, Voldemort and his cronies pursue Potter because he was one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes. The franchise’s most evil villain had accidentally imprinted himself on Harry when he was just a baby. This occurred when he murdered Harry’s parents and attempted to kill Harry as well.

And while it has been made clear that Voldemort can imprint on a person, no one is certain if twins can be turned into one’s Horcrux. At the same time, if Voldemort had attacked the twins’ parents instead of Harry’s, then Ron and Ginny would not exist.
