The Hellfire Gala event comic book storyline is in full swing, and the X-Men have never looked better, with fantastic costumes inspired by high fashion. These are far from the most extravagant costumes the X-Men and other mutants have worn over the years, though some might even be conservative compared to looks from the past.

While the Hellfire Gala looks are designed only for this particular event, the X-Men have worn some wild costumes out in the field.

10 Kitty Pryde Kit-Bash

Kitty Pryde’s costume in the Hellfire Gala is suitably a kitbash of different influences. It might be a less than subtle reference to one of her and the X-Men’s most outlandish costumes ever.

In Uncanny X-Men #149, a young Kitty designs her own costume by throwing together many different looks, including roller skates and knee-high socks. She also wore a domino mask that was very Batwoman from the Golden Age. It was a bit of a clashing start for Kitty Pryde, a character who changed the X-Men and comic books forever.

9 Even More Kitty Pryde

Kitty was unrelenting in her bad fashion sense. Arguably, she’s without a signature look outside of her basic X-Men training uniform, but in Uncanny X-Men #155, Kitty continues her quest to find the perfect costume.

In the process, she adopts a costume that took a little inspiration from the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. Kitty guns through several costumes in this sequence, including a variation on the Phoenix costume, a bold take on Shi’ar Empress Lilandra’s look, and finally, Lord Vader himself.

8 Magneto (’80s)

Magneto has one of the most iconic costumes in all comic books. In the 1980s, when Magneto was arguably at his most wholesome, he adopted a new look that was a bold departure from his original costume.

Magneto began wearing a sleeveless costume, all purple in color with a giant violet M stretching down across the tunic. It was a unique look, to say the least. This particular costume wouldn’t last that long. By the end of the ’80s, Magneto was back in his regular outfit, which he’s worn more or less ever since.

7 Rogue’s Green Jumper

Rogue has one of the most famous costumes in X-Men history, courtesy of her ’90s Jim Lee redesign, but It was a long road to get there. She had numerous looks in the ’80s, including this green jumper. While green and black have always been associated with her, this particular outfit ended up very dated.

Rogue would try several different costume styles even after the success of her ’90s look, and her Hellfire Gala costume is yet another variation on her iconic green and black color scheme.

6 Polaris (’90s)

Polaris recently won the fan vote to join the new X-Men team, already one of the best X-Men rosters in the comics. She’s getting a new costume as well, which wisely avoids one of her most outlandish looks.

The mid-90s saw a lot of extreme looks for many superheroes and villains. Polaris had one of the most dramatic makeovers in this period, abandoning her previous green scheme for a bright gold and red look that really didn’t have much to do with her power or personality.

5 Sunspot (Reignfire)

Another casualty of the ’90s extremes that defined the era in comics was Sunspot. Roberto De Costa has long been a hero in the New Mutants, but in the ’90s, an evil version of him known as Reignfire emerged.

This is one of the more over-the-top costumes from the era, defined by its numerous gold spikes and shoulder pads. He also wore a massive orange cape that meant to signify fire maybe. It certainly would have fit in among the outlandish costumes of the Hellfire Gala.

4 Cyclops (Hound)

Cyclops has had a lot of looks over the years. One of his most outlandish is the Hound outfit he got while a prisoner of the supervillain Ahab.

This character came back in time from the Days Of Futures Past timeline and used his powers to make not only Cyclops into one of his mutant-hunting hounds but the Invisible Woman as well. Cyclops wore an armored costume, heavy on the shoulder pads and spikes, which would prefigure the costumes of the early ’90s just a few years later.

3 X-Force

That particular ’90s design aesthetic is perhaps best signified in the look of X-Force. This roster was overburdened with shoulder pads, long hair, and pouches. It was so pervasive that even the Hellfire Gala is making light of it with not so subtle callbacks to the pouches in the gala costumes.

Everyone in Marvel Comics, DC, and Image seemed to be wearing the same type of costume at the time, with endless belts and pouches. X-Force might have had the worst, though some of the looks from this era echo in current costumes for characters like Rictor and Siryn.

2 Cable (’90s)

Perhaps the most’ 90s costume of all belonged to Cable. His debut in the pages of New Mutants kicked off the team’s evolution into X-Force and many of the costume trends of the ’90s in comics.

His original look was defined by his ubiquitous belts and pouches, as well as the seat-cushion shoulder pads, which often got bigger depending on who was drawing him. His look is iconic, to be sure, but his outlandish early look is far from the realistic aesthetic that the MCU seems to have influenced in Marvel Comics.

1 Wolverine (Fang)

Wolverine has been involved in some funny comic book storylines over the years. They usually don’t involve his costume. In this case of the Fang costume, it was kind of silly. Wolverine took this costume from a member of the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, Fang, after defeating him.

The look wasn’t popular, though, with its overemphasis on teeth and skulls. The look lasted two issues in Uncanny X-Men #106 and #107, and Logan then went back to his usual yellow and blue look for much of the early 80s.
