Not even a week after teasing it, SNK has fully unveiled its free crossover DLC character for Samurai Shodown. Hailing from Honor of Kings, Gongsun Li will be added to the roster on August 5, 2020, for all platforms (PC, PS4, Xbox One).

The news was revealed on Twitter ahead of the Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable that is set for Friday. Either SNK has nothing to announce or it jumped the gun here. Either way, a new trailer gives us our first look at Gongsun Li’s various moves. Bearing some resemblance to Wu-Ruixiang, she seems to prefer style over practically and will beat your ass with an umbrella.

For those unfamiliar with Chinese history, Honor of Kings could be compared to Dynasty Warriors for its romanticized retelling of events. In actual history, Lady Li was a concubine of Emperor Wu during the Han Dynasty. In Tencent’s popular franchise, she could be compared to Diaochan from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

There’s surprisingly little information across the internet about her backstory or in-game attributes, but SNK has clearly done its work. The promotion is a collaboration between the company and Tencent, so it stands to reason that the Chinese corporation had some input into Gongsun Li’s abilities.

It may be strange that we’re getting a second crossover character before any more popular veterans return, but you can’t complain about the price. Free is free, after all, and Gongsun fits the bill much better than For Honor’s Warden. Then again, she isn’t exactly from the same time period, having lived in BC times.

If historical accuracy is your main issue with Samurai Shodown, then you’re likely overthinking things. This is a game where a small woman can hang off of a hawk and strike her foes from the air. Another can even turn into a dragon and burn her opponents. SNK clearly wasn’t aiming for realism here and mashing characters together from different times is fine.

If the reception to Gongsun Li proves positive, we could end up seeing another free character for Samurai Shodown’s inevitable third season. I wouldn’t be opposed to another crossover character for that.
