How 90 Day Fiancé became a pop culture phenomenon. Love it or hate it the franchise has taken the reality world by storm and there is no end in sight.

No one enjoys having to work at a long-distance relationship, except for maybe the many lonely Americans who look for love abroad. 90 Day Fiancé follows couples from different walks of life as they travel abroad to meet their love interest and hopefully be able to secure them a K-1 visa. If the government approves their visa the couple has 90 days to marry. Many couples have succeeded while others have been proven illegitimate. Viewers watch as the international relationships unfold and mostly unravel in front of their eyes. The idea of having to overcome cultural and language barriers seems almost too hard for the hope of a life partner.

Who would have thought that back in January of 2014 TLC would deliver one of the greatest pop-culture phenomena of reality TV? Well, thank goodness they did as the show has since spurred numerous franchise spin-offs and hours of entertainment. Season 2 was where American caught on to the drama of the show thanks to Danielle Mullins who was 41 and Mohamed Jbali who was 26. The May-December romance was a scam from the beginning with fans not comprehending how the mother of three could not understand that this young Tunisian was never interested in her. Then came Nicole Nafziger and Azan Tefou in season 4, who again was just a man using a woman for a green card. The roller coaster of emotions drew in massive ratings.

The franchise was one of the first reality TV dating show that followed an American through the ins and outs of dating online, meeting a foreign love interest for the first time, and then marrying them within the time span awarded by the government. In a matter of a seven-month filming schedule fans watched as hearts broke, scams were uncovered, and love sometimes prevailed. Viewers often were left cringing as a woman who could be the same age as her boyfriend’s mother confided with cameras that she had found the love of her life while the young man often looked repulsed at the idea of having to touch her.

Fans at home tune in each week to try and decipher each couple’s love story. Wondering if they will work out and call it quits and which one is the liar. Not all root for the Americans as the last season of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days showed. Americans, Geoffrey Paschel, and Lisa Hamme were vilified for their poor behavior. Lisa used the n-word while Geoffrey had a criminal rap sheet over a mile long. As a spectator, you could not help but want to hate them.

The show and its respective spin-offs are going no whereas it is TLC’s most popular franchise. The ungrateful American complex is hard to swallow at times, but it just goes to show that the citizen is not always in the right, sometimes the foreigner is the one being taken advantage of. Reality TV only took off when the writer’s strike of 2009 took effect, leaving major Sunday night shows on hold and dead air needing to be filled. Thanks to the strike a whole new Sunday night was born, and TLC could not be more thankful.
