Here’s how Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night connects to the rest of the series. The original Paranormal Activity was a tiny budget found footage movie from director Oren Peli, and revolved around a couple who set up cameras around their home when they suspect they’re being haunted. The film made up for its lack of budget by squeezing as much tension as possible from the concept, alongside some well-timed jump scares. After the movie was picked up the original plan was to remake it with a bigger cast and budget, but after a test screening showed just how effective the original version was, it was released as it – albeit with a new jump scare ending suggested by Steven Spielberg.

Paranormal Activity was one of Blumhouse’s earliest hits, and it launched a franchise that ran for five sequels. Paranormal Activity 3 – which was a prequel – and The Marked Ones are considered the best of these follow-ups, but the “final” entry Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension was widely considered a disappointment. A seventh entry is currently scheduled for a 2021 release.

One installment in the series that tends to be completely forgotten is Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night, a Japanese language spinoff from 2010. The story follows Koichi, who is looking after his sister Shigeyuki following a car accident in America that left her in a wheelchair. The movie largely plays like a remake of the first movie, with Koichi sitting up cameras in Shigeyuki’s room after they come to suspect a spirit is in the house.

One thing fans probably want to know is how Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night links to the rest of the franchise – or if it even has any. The movie eventually reveals that the car accident that left Shigeyuki in a wheelchair also involved Katie, the main character from the first movie. The demon that possessed Katie – which is dubbed Toby – followed Shigeyuki back to Japan to cause further mischief. Obviously, fans will know this plot conflicts with the events of later sequels, and it’s clear the filmmakers behind the franchise don’t consider Tokyo Night canon as its events were never brought up in other sequels.

Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night is an intriguing curio in the series, but while it features a couple of eerie moments it’s still a somewhat flat retread of the first Paranormal Activity. It’s worth seeking out for completionists, even though its events are decidedly non-canon to the rest of the franchise.
