Fans have been imagining what games for the PlayStation 5 would look like in PS1-inspired square-shaped cases, and the results are fantastic. As Sony continues its slow drip of information regarding the upcoming next-gen console, players have created a number of impressive fan-made mock-ups for the system and its various aspects in recent months.
These have ranged from hypothetical designs for the PlayStation 5 console itself to alternative color schemes for the recently unveiled DualSense controller, including a more traditional all-black finish. Now, these creative minds have turned their attention to wondering what form the console’s packaging for physical releases will take, with some imagining eschewing the DVD case-style look of the current PS4 cases in favor of a more nostalgic approach.
Reddit user /u/optamizm fan-made mock-ups of hypothetical PlayStation 5 game cases, both in the style of current, rectangular PS4 boxes and the older, square-shaped design of the original PlayStation cases. While it is more likely that the PS5 will continue the trend set by the former, it has been noted that a smaller, more CD-like case would be more ecologically friendly, as such a package would take less plastic to make.
This last part could be a strong point of thought for Sony, as the subject of climate change and the role plastic products like video game cases play in it has become a hot-button debate in recent years. Companies like Sega and Ubisoft have taken this issue to heart, as they have made pledges to cut back on waste with such steps as discontinuing paper manuals and producing more eco-friendly packaging for their PC releases. Sony itself has also joined in such discussion, having previously made a pact with U.N.’s Playing For The Planet alliance to ensure that the PlayStation 5 will be more environmentally friendly than consoles past.
Part of this initiative could be shipping games in smaller, more resource-efficient packages like the kind used in the PS1 era of old. In addition to being quite pleasing to the eye in these fan-made mock-ups, some players might feel a nice touch of nostalgia for the classic square-shaped designs, not to mention finding the more CD-like cases easier to store. On the other hand, some might be concerned about losing these game cases easier than their larger breather, and others still have grown accustomed to the newer, rectangular style of the more recent PS4 boxes. Only time will tell which direction Sony takes with its PlayStation 5 game cases, but with the console itself set for a Holiday 2020 release, that answer might be just around the corner.
