How Shadowlands Can Bring Back A Classic World Of Warcraft Hero

World of Warcraft’s lore has always been driven by its memorable characters, and players should expect the upcoming expansion to be no different. In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, players will have the opportunity to fight side by side with their favorite characters as they work to thwart Sylvanas Windrunner and the mysterious “Jailer.” While previously established allies are sure to play a major part in the storyline, Blizzard may still have a few surprises in store for the players.

[Warning: Spoilers for World Of Warcraft’s story below]

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands takes place in the Shadowlands, a realm best known for its connection to the dead and its role as an afterlife for many of World of Warcraft’s beloved characters. Since many players will quest through the Shadowlands during their journey to level 60, Blizzard will have the opportunity to bring back fan-favorite characters from the past in a lore-friendly way. While there is no shortage of iconic figures for Blizzard to choose from, a former leader of the Alliance stands out: High King Varian Wrynn.

Although not every dead character needs to make an appearance in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, there is a solid argument for Wrynn’s inclusion. Despite being such a prominent name in the history of World of Warcraft, Varian Wrynn was actually absent in both the base game as well as World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. While his storyline during that time period was explored in various novels and comic books, many casual World of Warcraft fans never had the chance to learn about that period in Wrynn’s life.

Blizzard Can Bring Back Varian Wrynn In Shadowlands

Blizzard can use the player’s time in the Shadowlands as the perfect excuse to finally explore where Varian was before he led the Valiance Expedition to Northrend, as well as how his actions have shaped the world up to this point. Blizzard could potentially include a questline or instance which involves Varian, allowing World of Warcraft veterans to fight by his side again. This may also give Blizzard a chance to reunite Varian and his son Anduin one last time, providing a moment of hope within the dark and gloomy expansion.

When players last saw Varian Wrynn, it was during the Battle for the Broken Shore, in the first phase of World of Warcraft: Legion. During a cinematic, players watched as Sylvanas Windrunner withdraws her Horde forces, leaving Wrynn and his troops to fight for themselves. When the Orcish Warlock Gul’dan used his fel magic in order to destroy an airship and kill Varian’s troops, the King leaped into action to defend them. When Wrynn was defeated in battle, he raised his head in defiance and told Gul’dan that he sacrificed himself “for the Alliance.”

While World of Warcraft’s storyline has mostly focused on the young Anduin Wrynn since his father’s death, Varian remains an important part of the world’s lore. Since World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will regularly spotlight former Horde Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner, Blizzard may bring back Varian so that the two can come face to face one last time.
