How Skyrims New Fishing Mechanics Work In Anniversary Edition

Bethesda has revealed an upcoming mechanic to Skyrim Anniversary Edition at QuakeCon 2021: the long-awaited inclusion of fishing. Players will no longer have to swim into rivers and catch fish with their bare hands. Instead, they can pick up fishing supplies and engage in a more immersive experience. How exactly will Skyrim’s new fishing features work, though?

The fishing mechanic – which will be a free upgrade for all existing Skyrim players, much like Skyrim Special Edition in 2016 – comes alongside over 500 pieces of Bethesda Creation Club elements in Skyrim Anniversary Edition, which will add new items, quests, bosses, and spells into the game. Alongside a free next-gen upgrade, it seems as though Skyrim Anniversary Edition will present plenty of reasons for even long-time Skyrim players to return to Tamriel yet again to experience the new content.

Although fishing has existed in the form of mods and Creations for years, this is the first time it’s officially been added to the series. It’s relatively unclear at the moment, however, whether the fishing mechanic implemented in Skyrim Anniversary Edition is made by Bethesda developers, an outside source, or a Creation Club modder. In that regard, not much is known about how its gameplay mechanics will work. Some information can be gleaned from the reveal, though, which debuted during a panel at QuakeCon 2021.

How Fishing Might Work In Skyrim Anniversary Edition

The fishing reveal from QuakeCon shows the Dragonborn approaching an interactive fishing supplies item near the bank of a river. This seems to imply that these will be scattered throughout Skyrim’s map, perhaps at designated fishing areas. They may also be craftable, though nothing has been mentioned to that extent thus far. A fishing pole line is then cast into the water. It’s worth noting that the directional map overlay doesn’t seem to be visible while in the fishing game mode.

When the line is tugged, players will likely need to click or press a button in order to pull the line back in, though what exactly the success rate of a catch might be also hasn’t been revealed yet. The caught fish then appears as a pop-up on the screen. Given that the Skyrim Anniversary Edition isn’t set to come out until November of 2021, it’s possible that the mechanic is still a work in progress and exact gameplay elements haven’t been sorted out yet. More information is likely to be revealed as the official release date approaches, though for the time being there are still plenty of popular mods and Creation Club elements that emulate a similar experience for any Skyrim fans who just can’t wait.
