Intel has announced plans to bring a fully integrated autonomous taxi service to the streets in 2022, although the service won’t be available in the US. Following in the footsteps of Google’s own Waymo, it seems the company has gone all-in on developing a ride-sharing service built around autonomous vehicles. This push is just the latest attempt to bring AVs more into the mainstream spotlight.
Building autonomous vehicles is notoriously difficult due to the complex software and hardware integrations that need to work seamlessly and safely. For instance, a Waymo vehicle uses a combination of LiDAR, radar, and cameras to effectively collect physical data. Once collected, it has to be translated and comprehended in order for the car to make autonomous decisions. Intel has some experience in that arena, however, considering the company is a giant when it comes to developing processing systems.
In what seems like a natural move, Intel is bringing its own AVs to the streets of Munich, Germany in 2022. The company is using its proprietary Mobileye Drive self-driving system built into fleets operating under the MoovitAV name. To assist in processing functionality, the vehicles will also house eight “EyeQ 5” SoCs. These hardware systems will allow MoovitAV vehicles to process real-world data efficiently using what Intel calls its “True Redundancy sensing solution” and the “Mobileye Roadbook AV map.” The vehicles are also equipped with cameras, lidar, and radar sensors in order to collect real-world traffic and obstacle information. Operating in cooperation with the ride-hailing service, Sixt, the initial plan is to transport passengers in a testing capacity.
Intel’s AV Expansion
Though the company plans on bringing its Mobileye vehicles to Munich as well as Tel Aviv, there has not been any mention of expanding or even testing in the US. Currently, the plan outlined by Intel is to bring Mobileye to Germany as a result of the AV law recently passed in the country. Intel states that under regulatory approval, the company will move on from testing to a commercial capacity, bringing the ride-hailing service to even more people.
Intel says that the Mobileye drive system isn’t built solely for the Mobileye MoovitAV. Rather, the self-driving system was built with the intention of incorporating it in other vehicles and for more than just transporting passengers. In other words, the shipment of goods and materials is a sector Intel absolutely has its eye on. The company also has plans to collaborate with Schaeffler in the production of self-driving shuttles. If things go according to plan, chances are that riders will find themselves inside a Mobileye operated vehicle someday soon. Intel testing its Mobileye robotaxi in Germany in 2022 is simply the next step.
