Obsession, passion, and homicide are all back again for the third season of Netflix’s popular thriller You, which finds Joe Goldberg and Love Quinn raising their son Henry in bucolic Madre Linda. As life seemed to just be settling down for the family in their new suburban home, viewers weren’t prepared when old habits saw Joe lusting after two new obsessions, only for the script-flipping Love to give Joe a taste of his own medicine.

This season took everything about the prior two seasons and cranked the volume on the gore, violence, and assault up to 11, with its most shocking moments inspiring countless memes from across the social media channels. In the wild world of You, even homicide can get hilarious.

10 The Blue Cap

Danger is afoot whenever Joe dons his trusty blue cap, ensuring that murder and mayhem are just around the corner (or large shrub). Like Clark Kent wearing glasses to disguise himself from being recognized as Superman, Joe seems to think the blue cap he wears to carry out his master schemes is enough to conceal his identity completely.

One Twitter user even likened it to the Cloak of Invisibility from the Harry Potter series, and it came in handy for the young wizard more than a few times, so keep rocking that inconspicuous blue ballcap, Joe.

Fans have been surprisingly excited about the birth of Henry, Joe and Love’s little bundle of blackmail who helps them blend in even more to their quaint suburban surroundings. But even an adorable, innocent baby hasn’t stopped them from wondering—will baby Henry grow up to take after his murder-loving parents?

Using a scene from American Dad, this fan can’t help but wonder if Joe himself is suspicious of his newborn child (and the feeling seems mutual). Things can get complicated for all young parents, but even more so when murder is thrown into the mix.

8 Where You At?

While Season 1 was all about Beck, Season 2 introduced Love Quinn, and Season 3 was definitely her show. As the breakout star, she not only usurped Joe as a character, she’s also outsmarted him as a killer. It might be an unpopular opinion on Reddit, but Joe’s considered by some fans to be a good guy who doesn’t deserve the special Love treatment.

Living with someone that knows everything about him and accepts him for who he is (including his sanguinary tendencies) is great for Joe at first, but when Love gets as obsessive as he is about keeping their family together, he discovers that he’ll need to think of a way to extricate himself from so much attention.

The kill count takes a giant spike when Love encroaches on Joe’s territory, often taking matters into her hands at the slightest provocation. If Joe even shows as much as a twinkle of interest in anyone else (and he does this season), she’s ready to take them out of the equation.

Fans know that couples like Joe and Love, or the Joker and Harley Quinn, shouldn’t be viewed as desirable or healthy. But melodramatic, sexually-charged volatility makes for excellent television. Joe and Love’s bizarre exchanges and interactions continue to entertain, even as they take detours from the source material.

6 YouVision

There might be some temptation to compare Love with Wanda, since both have deceased spouses, brothers who were shot, and both got a little wild in the suburbs, but that’s where the similarities end. Unlike the fan-favorite superhero on WandaVision, Love isn’t ranking high on anyone’s list of You’s most likable characters.

Love has a truly obsessive need to collect friends and lovers, which makes her very codependent. And when coupled with her comfort overstepping the boundaries of others under the guise of appearing like a “good friend just trying to help”, it’s clear that her brand of behavior is vastly different from the virtuous –and understandably done with everyone– Wanda.

Love became a standout character in Season 3 because of her impulsivity, which was a far cry from her calculated behavior in Season 2. She was capable of anything, including murder (and screaming about murder right in front of Sherry and Cray) without fearing the repercussions.

Fans seemed to relish Love’s reckless murders over Joe’s slow and methodical stalking, and Season 3 often became devoted to her killing spree by the end. But in many ways, there were a lot of reasons why Love was just like Joe, which is why it took such drastic action for them to be rid of each other.

Meme of the freaking year! 😂😂😂 #YOUSEASON3 pic.twitter.com/3ce9Ca59ip

Love’s jealousy inspired a great deal of the murders in Season 3, but there might have been a way for Joe and Love to maintain a somewhat “healthy marriage” (as much as possible for serial killers) by not being so possessive with one another. Each character seemed to genuinely care about someone else while at the same time feeling like they were trapped in their own relationship.

Polyamory was introduced in the season, yet at no time did either character suggest maintaining a romantic relationship with someone else while still respecting the sanctity of their marriage to one another. If they had, Joe might not have had to clean up so many of Love’s messes.

3 No One Will Ever Know

Joe and Love look like any other young, attractive couple in Madre Linda, a Silicon-Valley suburb that the series loves to lampoon with critiques of its residents addicted to presenting an Instagram-worthy lifestyle and being ever-vigilant about their health, all the while participating in recreational drug use behind closed doors.

While some fans might think the couple stands out like a sore thumb (or is that toe?), they might be able to keep a low profile if Love would keep her killing spree under control. After all, as bad as Joe can be at committing his crimes, he was only arrested one time for taking his intimacy to a public location.

2 To Sum Up

This is what I’ve summed up so far. #YouNetflix #YOUSEASON3 pic.twitter.com/rCW26I9YkI

It’s true that Joe doesn’t always set out to kill anyone, he just doesn’t want anyone else to love the object of his affections. His clandestine machinations eventually get exposed, he gets backed into a corner, and he has to do what he has to do to avoid the authorities. Love, on the other hand, kills with intent and on purpose, seemingly unconcerned with local law enforcement.

Like this meme suggests, Love completely derailed the season, and anything Joe was trying to accomplish –such as raising a family and avoiding his troubled past from catching up to him– was not going to stand a chance against her increasing velocity.

Exploding houses. DNA evidence baked into pies. Suicide-murder pacts. Was there really any other way for You’s Season 3 to end? And perhaps more importantly to fans, how can the season possibly be topped in Season 4?

Some fans felt that with all the chaos in Madre Linda forcing the big Reset button to be pressed, and with Joe getting a “Fresh Tart” in another country, the biggest problem for Season 4 is already obvious — nothing new is going to happen, and the format will repeat itself.
