A mind-bending Minecraft optical illusion makes a standard cobblestone block look absolutely massive. Mojang’s beloved title produces randomly-generated worlds for players to explore, and these worlds consist of countless different blocks of various types. Minecraft includes many different blocks, with each possessing its own properties and distinct origins in-game.

Minecraft’s blocks range from extremely common to amazingly rare, with their rarity often reflecting their in-game value. Dirt, cobblestone and Wood are the survival sandbox game’s most basic resources, and players are expected to collect these blocks immediately before collecting more useful ones later on. Wood and cobblestone allow players to make tools, such as shovels and pickaxes, which can then be used to more efficiently collect higher-tier resources. For example, players can use a Stone Pickaxe to mine for Iron, which can then be used to craft a faster and more durable Iron Pickaxe. Cobblestone can also be used to craft Minecraft’s Smooth Stone block, which can then be used to create a Blast Furnace, an Armor Stand and more.

Reddit user LautreCave has utilized Minecraft’s humble cobblestone block to create an astonishing optical illusion. The trick begins with a totally normal cobblestone block, which is floating in the air while the player floats next to it. On the ground, some distance behind the block, is a large wooden platform sitting in a massive field of grass. LautreCave then lands on a nearby wooden platform, which perfectly positions their view of the cobblestone so that it looks like it is sitting on top of the distant wooden platform. This makes the block look abnormally large, and LautreCave then subtly cuts the video to footage of a different cobblestone block on a similar platform, making it appear as though the floating block has been attached to the platform through perspective alone.

Despite first releasing back in 2009, Minecraft still maintains a large and loyal community of players. These creative architects are always building new in-game creations, ranging from simple structures to endlessly complex masterworks. One fan recently created a massive sand juggling art machine in Minecraft, resulting in a visual spectacle similar to LautreCave’s cobblestone illusion. The sand dancing creation makes use of Redstone, a Minecraft substance which allows players to program in-game machines like pistons and lights. By utilizing this powerful technology, the sand juggling machine can incorporate pistons which produce and launch sand at the flip of a switch to create a mesmerizing moving design.

While many players painstakingly design complex Minecraft machinery, players like LautreCave are able to fascinate viewers with a more simple and straightforward feat. The cobblestone block illusion is a simple video editing trick, but doing it within the digital world of Minecraft makes it even more confounding. By using some of Minecraft’s most abundant blocks, LautreCave was able to produce a fascinating optical illusion.
