December might be the month of gift-giving, but that doesn’t mean Xbox is going to stop giving away free games thanks to Games with Gold. January is just around the corner and it’ll feature several gems that are definitely worth picking up.

First among them is NeuroVoider, the twin-stick RPG rogue-lite shooter from Flying Oak Games. In NeuroVoider, you play as a brain that’s escaped from a jar and takes over the body of a robot. The game takes place following the robot apocalypse and the robots haven’t stopped partying since humanity was wiped out. That is, until you show up firing nuclear-powered death lasers at any robot you can see.

NeuroVoider features procedurally generated levels, enemies, and loot, with 8,736 unique enemies to defeat. Yes, they counted. The game also has four-player couch co-op and a soundtrack from Dan Terminus that really kicks ass. Expect lots of loot, giant boss fights, and explosions.

Next up is Aground from Fancy Fish Games. Aground was just released last year and has a definite Starbound vibe to it. Only instead of being pure sci-fi, there’s plenty of magic and dragons to enjoy too.

Aground first starts as a mining, crafting, and surviving RPG, but quickly goes to strange places where you relearn lost technologies, discover magic, and start flying around on the aforementioned dragon. You can visit new islands or entirely new planets; it’s up to you. Aground also has some pretty great reviews on Steam so it’s definitely worth checking out for $0.

Next are two games from the Xbox 360-era that have been brought forward thanks to backward compatibility. Radiant Silvergun has been described as one of the best shmups that never made it out of Japan, featuring constant boss fights and a soundtrack and graphics that stand up even today. Space Invaders Infinity Gene is also a top-down shooter, but unlike the classic arcade game, players eventually evolve new powers like moving vertically around the map or firing new weapons.

As always, download these games for free during the specified periods and you’ll keep ‘em forever.
