April 20, 2020, marks the 30th anniversary of the Fire Emblem series and Nintendo has shown its customary desire to celebrate its established franchises by adding two save states for the original Fire Emblem game on the Japanese Nintendo Switch Online service.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light was released for the Nintendo Famicom on April 20, 1990. It was the first entry in the series and it featured the debut of Marth. The Fire Emblem games weren’t released outside of Japan until Marth and Roy’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee inspired interest in the characters, leading to the series growing a cult audience in the west.

The people who subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online service can access free NES games through an app that can be downloaded on the eShop, and fans with a Japanese account can download the Famicom equivalent, which has a different line-up of games. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light is available on the Japanese eShop and Nintendo is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the series by adding two Special versions of the game to the app, which are essentially two save states from different points in the game.

There are exciting rumors regarding Nintendo’s plans for the upcoming 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series, which could include HD remasters of games like Super Mario Sunshine and the two Super Mario Galaxy games. Nintendo is less kind when it comes to other franchises, as was the case when the 30th anniversary of the EarthBound/MOTHER series was celebrated with a Spirit Board event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Fire Emblem Heroes is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the series with classic heroes coming to the game as part of a special event, which is something at least. The addition of these Special versions of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light is what we’ve come to expect from Nintendo and its approach to celebrating the existence of some of its beloved franchises.
