Overwatch Fan Creates Incredible Pokemon-Inspired Short
An Overwatch fan and professional animator creates an incredible Pokemon-inspired fight scene between Genji and Hanzo, even including a legendary dragon.

There’s just something about Overwatch and Pokemon that seems to make the two video game franchises fit together well. Fans of Blizzard’s multiplayer shooter just can’t resist creating crossovers with Nintendo’s pocket monster series. After one fan turned Overwatch characters into Pokemon, another has imagined what would happen if it was the other way around.
In an animated short called Overwatch UNLEASHED, a creator named Dillon Gu has designed an impressive battle between the Shimada brothers, Hanzo and Genji. The short sees Hanzo take down a horde of bots from the Shimada clan, delivering dizzying melee attacks and expertly aimed arrow shots to take them down. The Overwatch archer doesn’t even break a sweat as he fires a scatter arrow that takes down several bots.
The twist comes when Hanzo fires his ultimate ability. Instead of his usual ultimate ability, Dragonstrike, which sends a giant dragon through the map and taking out anything in its path, Hanzo’s triggering of his ultimate conjures two (Water and Flying-type Pokemon) Gyarados instead. The Pokemon absolutely obliterate the battlefield before Hanzo puts the dragons back into their Poke Ball.
Unfortunately, Hanzo’s troubles don’t end there. Genji shows up to discuss the family legacy but it is soon revealed that he too has a different ultimate ability; triggering his Dragonblade conjures (Dragon and Flying-type Pokemon) Rayquaza instead. The look on Hanzo’s face when he realizes what’s about to happen is absolutely priceless.
Dillon Gu is well-known for his creations in the Overwatch community and the animator has produced similar animated battle shorts about Zenyatta and Genji as well as angelic healer Mercy. Gu formerly worked as an animator on (Rooster Teeth animated show) RWBY and is currently a partner of a YouTube network. Some fans have called for Blizzard to hire Gu, enlisting him to work on the official Overwatch animated shorts that are released by the company every few months or so.
At this point, it’s unclear whether Blizzard might consider doing that, but the company is known for staying aware of what the Overwatch community is doing. For example, when an artist in the community created an Overwatch map for Rio de Janeiro and when another artist designed a concept for a Thai character, Blizzard seemed to take notice. Fans would argue that animated shorts are not released nearly as often as they would like, so fingers crossed Blizzard will hire Gu to speed up those efforts.
