Penny Dreadful has always been a series rooted in its time period and setting, but the new spinoff series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels changes everything. Although the Victorian setting of the original is where the series gets its name, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in a completely different time and place.
Penny Dreadful first premiered in 2014. It is a gothic horror drama with ties to Victorian England as well as many famous works of dark literature, borrowing themes and characters from such works as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, and many others. In many ways, a lot of what made the show so popular with fans was how it portrayed and re-envisioned its gothic setting. It is lurid, sensational, and over-the-top, but given the show’s name, this is exactly what audiences like about it.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, on the other hand, takes the series’ style and mythology to a more modern setting. This new series premiered on April 26, 2020, and looks to retain what viewers liked about the original but with new characters and ideas. In other words, the dark themes remain, but new entities will be explored, such as the deity of death from Mexican-American folklore, Santa Muerte.
When Penny Dreadful Takes Place
Penny Dreadful, the original series, takes place during the Victorian Era in England. Queen Victoria ruled from 1837 until her death in 1901, although the show is based largely around the later years of her rule, near the end of the nineteenth century. Ideologically, the Victorian era saw a rise in romanticism and mysticism, which had a large effect on the culture and ideas of the times and is reflected in a resurgence of art and literature. Penny Dreadful embraces not only the romanticism and mysticism of Victorian England but also the pulpy and lurid nature of some of the literature that was popular at the time.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, starring Natalie Dormer, takes place about 50 years after the original series. It starts specifically in 1938 Los Angeles, during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Similar to the original series, it is set to follow some of the historical events and politics that took place during that time, such as the building of Los Angeles’s first freeways and the rise of radio evangelism. It also explores Mexican-American folklore from that time period, with a secret conflict brewing between those who follow Santa Muerta and those who follow the Devil. Overall, Penny Dreadful has always been a show with deep ties to when it takes place, whether that is nineteenth-century England or 1938 America.
