Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

Throughout the entire Pokémon series, now eight generations deep, there are now so many different abilities that Pokémon can possess, with some being better than others. However, among the masses of abilities out there, there are several that are exclusive to particular Pokémon or specific evolution lines.

While some of these can be considered borderline useless either because of the ability itself or due to the Pokémon it belongs to not being useful enough, there are some signature abilities that stand out and are utilized a lot by players, especially on the professional circuit.

10 Corviknight’s Mirror Armor Is A Potential Game-Changing Ability

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

For the intimidating Steel-Flying type Corviknight, its hidden ability Mirror Armor is a hidden gem. Mirror Armor reflects any stat reductions aimed at the user back at the opponent which can be hugely important, especially in competitive battling.

Intimidate is an ability that everyone looks to utilize in battles as it lowers the opponent’s attack stat when the user enters the battle, but Mirror Armor is a complete game-changer as it negates the effectiveness of this ability and reflects it back. Corviknight’s stats aren’t the best anyway so preventing any further reductions and inflicting them on the enemy instead gives it more of a chance in battle and allows for several strategies.

9 Stance Change Gives Aegislash Flexibility To Adapt Accordingly During A Battle

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

Stance Change is an ability exclusive to Aegislash the Steel-Ghost Sword Pokémon. In shield mode by default, Aegislash will change to its blade form before attacking, adjusting and boosting its offensive power accordingly.

It can then use King’s Shield to switch back to its shield form, or it can just be withdrawn to set it to its default state once again. Stance Change is an ability that is more obvious with its effectiveness in the anime, with Sawyer and Wikstrom both showing off an Aegislash and its ability.

8 Toxic Boost Gives Zangoose Supreme Offensive Power When Afflicted With Poison

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

In a similar vein to the ability Guts, where a status affliction gives the user better attack power, Toxic Boost is exclusive to Zangoose and gives it an attack boost of 50% when it is poisoned.

With Zangoose already having an attack base stat of 115 and an arsenal full of physically offensive moves, a poisoned Zangoose could be an extraordinarily powerful member of any team, even to the point where the user could intentionally poison it to trigger the ability.

7 Medicham’s Physical Attack Is Doubled With Pure Power

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

As the name would suggest, Pure Power is an ability that doubles the user’s attack stat, which, as Medicham is a Fighting and Psychic-type, will make its Fighting-type moves pack even more of a punch.

Medicham’s base attack stat is not too great at 60, but doubling it to 120 will make it lethal especially if given a further boost. Medicham’s alternate hidden ability is Telepathy which is only useful in double battles as it protects it from being hit by allies’ moves.

6 Shedinja’s Wonder Guard Is Bizarre But Can Be Utilized Well

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

Shedinja is a truly unique Pokémon in the sense that it only has 1 HP and has the ability Wonder Guard, meaning that it can only be hit by super-effective moves. However, as Shedinja is a dual Ghost-Bug type, it has 5 weaknesses that KO it easily; Flying, Rock, Ghost, Fire and Dark.

If used carefully and cleverly, while being given a Focus Sash to stop it from being knocked out in one go, Shedinja and Wonder Guard can be used to switch in to absorb non-effective moves and potentially frustrate opponents.

5 Goodra Makes Opponent’s Regret Using Physical Attacks With Its Gooey Ability

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

The hidden ability of the Goomy-line including Sliggoo and Goodra, Gooey lowers the speed of an attacking Pokémon by one stage if they make physical contact with the user. As Goodra’s defense is its lowest stat at 70, this could bait opponents into trying to exploit that weakness, only for them to become slower if they continue to persist with it.

This ability gives Goodra the potential to be a bulky handful for many an opponent, especially those that would normally excel and specialize in physically offensive moves.

4 Mimikyu’s Disguise Can Take A Hit For It

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

Mimikyu’s ability Disguise has been given several tweaks since its debut in Gen VII. Now from Gen VIII onwards, Disguise will take and absorb the first hit from its opponent, but now when it changes to its busted form, it will lose roughly 1/8 of its maximum HP.

This can be useful as it essentially acts like a Focus Sash or Endure, helping it to survive longer than just one attack, and giving it the chance to use a move that could help the overall course of a battle.

3 Transistor Gives Regieleki A Surge Of Power

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

New to the Pokémon franchise alongside its user Regieleki, introduced in the DLC of the Sword & Shield games, Transistor is a powerful ability that boosts the user’s Electric-type moves by 50%.

With base stats of 100 attack, 100 special attack and 200 speed, it is no surprise that professional Pokémon players have been utilizing Regieleki since its introduction to the series as it is an absolute offensive powerhouse with incredible speed, while only being weak to ground types.

2 Steam Engine Can Turn Coalossal Into A Speedy Behemoth

Pokémon 10 Best Signature Abilities Ranked

Exclusive to the Rolycoly-line, Steam Engine is an ability that is well-known to have been used and abused in the professional Pokémon double battles scene. A player need only use a Fire or Water-type move on the Coalossal and it will increase its speed by six stages.

Players have been known to Gigantamax a Coalossal holding a Weakness Policy and hitting it with a Water move, giving the player boosted speed and attack, leaving a quick and powerful coal-oven machine that would then be capable of sweeping teams.

1 Primal Groudon & Primal Kyogre Can Dictate Entire Battles With Extreme Weather

Desolate Land for Primal Groudon and Primordial Sea for Primal Kyogre work the same way but for different weather conditions and typing. Desolate Land creates extremely harsh sunlight which causes damage-dealing Water-type moves to fail and causes weather-inducing abilities such as Drizzle and Snow Warning to also fail.

Primordial Sea creates heavy rain that causes damage-dealing Fire-type moves to fail while blocking moves such as Sunny Day and abilities like Drought. Both abilities stay in effect until the Pokémon in question is replaced or removed from the battle.
