As far as trainers go, few can stand up to the accomplishments of Ash Ketchum. He’s saved the world multiple times, always collects every region’s badges, and managed to place fairly high in the conferences held throughout the world. His friends are as numerous as his Pokémon.

Even with all these accolades, there are still accomplishments that have eluded Ash—some of which should already be in his possession. However, the anime likes dragging these out, just as they did with him finally winning a Pokémon league title.

10 He’s Never Taken Down Team Rocket For Good

For an organization around since the very start of the series, it’s shocking that Ash or anyone has fully taken them down. The trio is always hovering around as comic relief no matter what season they are in, but it goes beyond them.

Giovanni’s been around for several seasons, and even when he’s not, someone is always trying to pick up the mantle as leader of the organization. They are like a cockroach that won’t die.

9 He’s Never Come Close To Completing A Pokédex

The biggest weakness Ash has always had as a trainer is that he doesn’t catch a lot of Pokémon. It isn’t that he gets sidetracked or lets a lot of them go either. He seems to have a quota per region of no more than ten Pokémon.

It’s an issue that’s shown as early as the original series when Gary had four times as many Pokémon as he did. He’s never gotten better throughout the years, still positioned under a hundred, despite how many regions he’s visited.

8 His Goal Of Becoming A Pokémon Master Is Still A Ways Off

For a man who’s always strived to be the best, the best there ever was, Ash does a lot of losing. Sure, he wins a lot too, but Ash is routinely getting bounced by characters who don’t hold a lot of plot significance when it comes to tournaments.

Who he’s lost to makes the fact it took him over a decade to win a tournament seem worse finally. He’s a trainer that at times seems like he gets by on pure luck more than he does skills, far from what is expected of a master.

7 He Never Ran Through A Regions’ Gym Leaders Without Multiple Setbacks

Admittedly, it’d make for a boring series if this were the case, but with the conferences becoming more of the end game with trainer battles, it’s surprising that Ash always has so much trouble with gym leaders.

As the series has gone on, their significance has taken a hit, no longer being looked on as the world’s most powerful trainers. For someone as strong as Ash is, it’s odd that he loses to them as often as he does, and not only that, he often receives badges without defeating them at all.

6 He Hasn’t Evolved More Of His Pokémon

Part of the reason Ash’s Pokédex will never be close to full is his unwillingness to evolve certain Pokémon. Obviously, the biggest one is his beloved Pikachu, who made it clear that he didn’t want to be evolved, but it goes beyond just him.

Ash is routinely fighting others with the base form of a Pokémon that has at least one evolution, often two. For someone who wants to be a master as he wants to be, it’s odd he so rarely evolves anything.

5 He Should Be A Multi-Time Pokémon League Champion

If there’s one thing that’s aggravating about the Pokémon anime, it’s how Ash is treated in Conferences. It would be one thing if he lost to someone who would go on to be a rival or even if he lost to a friend of his.

More often than not, he loses to characters who never appear again after their season is over. It’s mind-numbing considering that Ash is known around the world and a proclaimed chosen one. Someone like that should never be losing to fodder characters as often as he does.

4 He’s Never Accomplished The Maturity Needed To Accept A Loss

There’s no doubt that he’s better at this now, far from the child who locked himself in his room to cry himself to sleep after losing to Ritchie during a conference. He can now at least try to take some good from defeat, showing he’s grown up some as the series has gone on.

However, he’s still far from an adult, and for a character that’s been at this as long as he has, it’s rather inexcusable. He should be well versed in being both a gracious winner and a supportive loser.

3 He’s Never Had The Full Unbridled Love Of His Pokémon Roster

One of the more confounding things when it comes to Ash is that he always seems to have a problem with Pokémon. For years, Charizard routinely ignored Ash and did whatever it was he wanted, including falling asleep in the middle of a full battle, costing Ash the match.

Snivy’s acted the same in later incarnations, among others. What’s odd is Ash is one of the more empathetic and Pokémon friendly trainers you’re going to find. Oddly, he’s never accomplished a fully cooperative roster before.

2 He’s Never Explored The Possibilities Of His Aura Ability

For a character labeled the chosen one by various Pokémon and people, he’s shown a staggering amount of disinterest in the achievement. Any other trainer would have followed up on the special ability given to him, exploring it fully and expanding its capabilities.

They’d try to live up to the chosen proclamation. Not Ash, though. He has no interest in that accomplishment, only ever using Aura when absolutely pressed into it.

1 He’s Never Had A Girlfriend

It isn’t related to his accomplishments as a trainer, but that doesn’t make it any less surprising. For as long as the series has been around, Ash has never expressed interest in any of his companions, much less had a girlfriend.

Occasionally the series teases this with his female companions—which is especially true with Serena, who isn’t shy about her crush on him. However, he seems to have no interest in romance, which isn’t all that odd considering he is eternally 10-years-old—and is more interested in bettering himself as a trainer.
