There are many different things to love about Brock. He has a good heart, takes great care of his Pokémon, and always believes in Ash and picks him up whenever he’s down. But like everyone, the Pokémon Breeder turned trainee doctor has made his fair share of mistakes.

Brock is known for his cooking, being the oldest of ten children, and his failures with members of the opposite sex. There are plenty of other things Brock has failed at, however, whether it be a Pokémon battle, living up to his ambition, or failing to see something that’s right in front of his eyes.

10 Despite Being The Navigator Of The Group, Brock Gets Lost A Lot

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

Brock’s main roles in the group are to cook and navigate. While he does appear to cook up some delicious chow for Pokémon and humans alike, the gang ends up getting lost rather a lot thanks to him. That leads to situations that take up a lot of time and energy and often involve Team Rocket. Many episodes have begun with the narrator saying something along the lines of, “We find the group lost in the woods.”

9 Brock Lost To Meowth In A Tournament To Decide Who Takes Care Of Togepi

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

After Togepi hatches in “Who Gets To Keep Togepi?” Meowth, Brock, Misty, and Ash take part in a sudden death tournament to see who gets to take care of it. It starts with Meowth against Brock, who sends out Onix. At first, Meowth’s Scratch attacks do nothing, but then he throws buckets of water on Onix and uses Fury Swipes to win the battle. It’s not a great showing from Brock and his Onix, to say the least. Ash wins the tournament but Togepi wants to go with Misty, as she’s the first person it sees after hatching.

8 Brock Never Fulfilled His Goal Of Becoming The World’s Best Pokémon Breeder

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

Before deciding to become a Pokémon Doctor, Brock’s goal for a long time was to be the best Pokémon Breeder, which was always rather vague. There’s no competition to see who the best Breeder is, after all.

While Ash has been trying his hardest to become a Pokémon Master by training and battling his Pokémon, Brock has spent the majority of his time cooking and chasing girls. One could only imagine what he could have achieved if he didn’t become infatuated with every woman he came across.

7 Brock Failed To Seal The Deal With A Woman Who Actually Liked Him

In “The Heartbreak Of Brock,” Brock and the gang meet the character of the day, Temacu, who instantly falls for Brock and is willing to marry him. It turns out, however, that it doesn’t take much to turn Temacu’s head because she falls in love with a doctor later in the episode. Even though he’s finally found someone who’s interested in him, Brock still ends up loveless and alone.

6 His Time With Professor Ivy Didn’t End Well

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

In “Poké Ball Peril,” Brock decides to leave Ash and Misty to be Professor Ivy’s assistant. He later returns to Pallet Town to rejoin Ash, but when Misty asks why he left Professor Ivy, he just falls to the ground shivering. When pressed by Meowth later in the episode as to why he left, Brock still doesn’t give an answer. His time with Professor Ivy is shrouded in mystery, but it’s fairly obvious that something bad has happened between them.

5 Brock Has Failed To Grow

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

Brock never appears to change, which is shown through his constant inabilities to control his emotions and speak properly to women. Even though he’s older and more mature than Ash and knowledgeable about the world of Pokémon, Brock has failed to evolve as a character. One might think that experiencing so much rejection would have made him take a step back and change a few things about how he goes about things, but this doesn’t appear to be the case.

4 He Lost To Ash’s Pikachu With Onix

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

When Brock battled Ash in “Showdown in Pewter City,” it should have been an easy victory for the Gym Leader. Ash’s Pikachu, an Electric-type, was up against Brock’s Onix, a Rock/Ground-type, which was supposed to be immune to Electric attacks. Onix looked to have Pikachu beat with its Bind, but the sprinklers went off, causing Onix to become susceptible to Pikachu’s attacks.

Not wanting to win in such a way, Ash stopped the fight. Although Ash didn’t technically win, Brock still gave him the Boulder Badge. Brock’s inability to defeat a much smaller Pokémon with a huge type advantage on his side is surely one of his biggest failures.

3 He’s Constantly Rejected By Women

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

Brock’s failures with women are too numerous to count. Time and again he’s been rejected by countless Officer Jennys, Nurse Joys, and women he’s met along the way. Some of the most soul-crushing rejections include the time a ninja girl brought him to his knees, when he was arrested trying to flirt with Officer Jenny, and when he thought he’d formed a connection with Florinda Showers, only to watch her propose to her gardener.

2 Brock Let Olivia Get Away

Pokémon Brocks 10 Biggest Failures Ranked

Olivia is similar to Brock in the fact that they are both Rock-type Trainers. Brock proposed as soon as he met her, saying it was “fate” that they met (even though Brock had actively sought Olivia out). They even defeated Team Rocket together using a heart-shaped Continental Crush in “Heart of Fire! Heart of Stone!” Ultimately, however, Olivia said she had more important matters to attend to, and the two appeared to have drifted apart since then.

1 He Mistook Rice Balls For Jelly Donuts

In “Primeape Goes Bananas,” the 25th episode of the anime, Brock, a cook, says the following while holding what are quite clearly rice balls: “These donuts are great! Jelly-filled are my favorite! Nothing beats a jelly-filled donut.” Brock’s failure to identify the rice balls correctly has turned out to be one of the biggest memes from the entire anime. His joy and enthusiasm just make his glaring error all the more baffling.
