What Lies Beneath The Mask is the newest Special Research to join Pokemon Go. It features its own set of challenges and rewards to give the player. Special Research tasks act as Pokemon Go’s version of a story mode, with Professor Willow providing exposition to the different events and the Pokemon that populate them. Unlike Timed Research tasks, these remain in the game until the player completes them. It does not have an expiration date. What Lies Beneath The Mask is focused on Ghost-type Pokemon.
Specifically, this Special Research is directly tied to the Yamask line. This Pokemon made its debut back in Pokemon Black and White as a spirit who passed to the afterlife and possessed a mask. It even has its own Galarian version, Runerigus that was introduced back in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Players can find and catch Runerigus in Pokemon Go but In order to evolve Galarian Yamask into Runerigus, players will need to have 50 Yamask candy and compete in 10 raid battles with it set as the player’s buddy. Yamask is even the Research Breakthrough reward for collecting seven days of stamps.
What Lies Beneath The Mask is broken up into four different stages. While players can complete this Special Research at any time, players should try and finish it before the end of October. This is because currently, the spawn rate of Ghost-type Pokemon, a species of Pokemon that players will need to catch plenty of, is drastically increased. It will likely be lowered once the Pokemon Go Halloween event comes to an end.
What Lies Beneath The Mask Special Research Tasks (& Rewards) in Pokemon Go
- Stage 1/4: Catch 40 Ghost-type Pokemon (400 Stardust), Transfer 9 Pokemon (Duskull Encounter), Make 49 Nice Throws (9 Ultra Balls) Rewards: Yamask Encounter, 4,000 XP, 9 Nanab Berries.
- Stage 2/4: Catch 40 Ghost-type Pokemon (Pikachu Encounter), Make 9 Curveball Throws (490 Stardust), Use 49 Berries to help catch Pokemon (Banette Encounter) Rewards: Yamask Encounter, 4,000 XP, 9 Razz Berries.
- Stage 3/4: Catch 40 Ghost-type Pokemon (400 Stardust), Catch 9 different species of Ghost-type Pokemon (Alolan Marowak Encounter), Make 49 Great Throws (49 Poke Balls) Rewards: Yamask Encounter, 4,000 XP, 9 Pinap Berries
- Stage 4/4: Claim Reward (49 XP, 490 XP, 4900 XP) Rewards: 4 Yamask Candy, 9 Yamask Candy, 4,900 Stardust.
This event has a heavy emphasis on the number 49. This is a reference to how to evolve Galarian Yamask in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Players needed to get their Galarian Yamask to 49 HP and then head over to the Dusty Bowl section of the Wild Area. After running under a specific stone arch, Galarian Yamask will evolve into Runerigus. Pokemon Go will introduce more Special Research tasks in the future.
