Pokemon Journeys, the 23rd season of the Pokemon animated series, finally explores the Galar region, the setting of the most recent installments of the main series franchise, Sword and Shield. With it comes the long-awaited premiere of the beloved character Sonia.

Sonia is introduced to Pokemon: Sword and Shield as the granddaughter and assistant to Professor Magnolia, the Galar region’s token Pokemon specialist. Sonia’s journey in the video game revolves around her quest to uncover the legends of the first king of Galar and the Darkest Day. She serves as a partner to the player, guiding them as they uncover the secrets together.

Now, fans are excited to see that Sonia has finally premiered in the Japanese-dubbed version of the anime series as part of the most recent episode of Pokemon Journeys aired on July 5th, titled “A Heroic Legend! Dande’s Ultimate Battle!!” In the episode, Ash and Goh meet Sonia, who, just like in Sword and Shield, is conveniently nearby to offer them context to their mysteries. Asking her about the golden statue that fans of the video game should recognize, she tells them disturbing information about the power behind Gigantamax, a special kind of Dynamax introduced in the eighth generation.

It looks like Sonia’s character will follow a similar path to that in Sword and Shield. After offering up information to Ash and Goh about the Darkest Day, she explains that it’s her “homework” to study the topic. This means fans will finally get to see more of the newest region as well as explore its lore, meaning there will be many more opportunities for Sonia to make appearances in future episodes.

Sonia is voiced by Marina Inoue, who was cast in the role at the end of June. Inoue is best known for her roles voicing My Hero Academia’s Momo Yayorozu and Attack on Titan’s Armin Arlet, as well as many other personalities in the anime industry, so avid anime fans should find the voice actress very familiar.

Similar to many other television shows and movies, Pokemon Journeys took a hit to its production process, forcing it into hiatus. The most recent episode featuring Sonia was originally intended to air in Japan on May 24th, but was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Pokemon Journeys’ first 12 episodes are now on Netflix.
