Pokémon Unite Launches for Nintendo Switch Next Month, Mobile Versions Arrive This Fall

Pokémon Unite, the MOBA set within the Pokémon universe, launches for Nintendo Switch in July, with a mobile version scheduled for September.

Pokémon Unite, the MOBA themed around everyone’s favorite pocket monsters, launches for Nintendo Switch in the very near future.

Announced by The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Unite will arrive on Nintendo’s hybrid console in July 2021; A specific date will be provided closer to launch. The game will be “free-to-start” for all players, although developer TiMi Studios has yet to confirm the extent of this approach. Players will likely be able to reach a certain in-game level before needing to pay for the rest of the game. EA’s recent Knockout City utilized a similar approach.

The Pokémon Company continued on to confirm that the mobile version of Pokémon Unite will launch in September 2021. It elaborated that cross-play between the Nintendo Switch and mobile versions of the game is planned. Cross-progression will also be implemented, allowing players to use either their Pokémon Trainer Club account or Nintendo account to sync their progress across both platforms.

“Pokémon UNITE takes place on Aeos Island, a mythical island said to be on the ocean’s unexplored frontier. On Aeos Island, players will find the Unite Battle Committee (UBC), which runs a series of Unite Battle tournaments,” reads the description for Pokémon Unite. “In Unite Battles, players form teams of five and compete against each other to see who can score the most points before time runs out. Players also experience a mysterious new form of energy known as Aeos energy. Aeos energy can be used in Unite Battles to evolve Pokémon.”

Pokémon Unite will play similar to a MOBA, or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, in the same vein as Dota 2 or League of Legends. Players can take control a variety of Pokémon, such as Charizard, Greninja and Pikachu, as they attempt to gain points throughout the match. Points are earned by capturing wild Pokémon or defeating opposing Pokémon and then depositing their gained Aeos energy into the enemy team’s goal zone.

Players will be able to customize their Pokémon’s appearance with a variety of outfits; the same can be done for their Trainer character. These cosmetics can be unlocked through both a free and premium seasonal Battle Pass. Outside of that, players can purchase more items through an in-game store.

Developed by TiMi Studios and The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Unite launches for Nintendo Switch in July. The mobile version of the game launches in September.
