Trainers are the backbone of the Pokémon world. They are the most recognizable characters of the franchise because they are at the center of every game. The anime’s lead, Ash Ketchum, and the first game’s protagonist, Red, are the franchise’s two most famous Trainers, representing the very best like no one ever was.

Throughout its 1,158 episodes, the anime featured multiple Trainers. Some of them were main characters, while others were recurring. Some were trusted companions, friends, and the others foes, but they all left a lasting impression on audiences. Every fan has their favorite Trainer, and their choice reveals a lot about their personality.

10 Hau: You’re Not Afraid To Make Mistakes

Unlike his game counterpart, Hau barely appears in the Sun & Moon anime. However, he leaves a lasting impression thanks to his good-natured personality.

Hau is an eager but inexperienced Trainer who wants to become Champion. His battle style still lacks direction, though, but he doesn’t let that stop him. Hau learns from every defeat, even if he doesn’t know how to deal with them in the best way. Hau is also unafraid of trying new techniques in search of the one that best suits him. With time, his ability improved considerably, allowing him to reach the Top 8 in the Manalo Conference.

9 Alain: You Love A Good Challenge

After debuting in the Mega Evolution Specials side series, Alain becomes a recurring character during the X & Y season. He’s a young and determined Trainer who gets easily distracted, often wandering off in his train of thought.

Alain loves being pushed into a corner because he knows that’s the only way a Trainer learns and grows. He enjoys a good battle and doesn’t mind losing. However, he takes Pokémon battles very seriously, and his demeanor visibly changes during them.

8 Tobias: You’re Enigmatic And Distant

Fans remember Tobias as the Trainer who beat Ash during the Lily of the Valley Conference in Sinnoh. Tobias is an exceptional Trainer, gifted and undeterred, but also fair and just. His skill is on full display during his battle against Ash, and his talent as a Trainer comes to light with the fact that he owns a Legendary Pokémon, Latios, and a Mythical one, Darkrai.

Despite his immense power, Tobias is also humble. He congratulates Ash on defeating his Darkrai, showing that he understands the nature of Pokémon battles.

7 Harrison: You’re Independent And Humble

Harrison is a recurring character in the Johto season and a rival of Ash’s. He’s an older mentor who loves Pokémon battles and seeks to become a better Trainer. He doesn’t brag about his victories or considerable talent and instead encourages others to do their best.

He is also staunchly independent. He’s out on his Pokémon journey by himself, with no companions other than his trusty Pokémon. Harrison is also mature enough to accept loss, and while he demands a lot from his Pokémon, he’s also kind and caring towards them, making him an ideal Trainer.

6 Kiawe: You’re A Fiery Competitor

Despite his stoic and seemingly detached exterior, Kiawe has a fire burning inside. He is a proud and sensitive young man who easily cries when overwhelmed. He loves Fire-type Pokémon and has a close bond with his Charizard. On one memorable occasion, he got so excited at the chance of rising a Kantonian Rapidash that he began to weep.

Kiawe is also very competitive, and his pride prevents him from accepting help from others. His fierce and intense attitude can scare others, but Kiawe’s motivation takes him very far. He is notoriously the only of Ash’s classmates to already have a Z-Ring at the beginning of Sun & Moon, proving that his determination is not for naught.

5 Barry: You’re Overly Enthusiastic

Fans of the franchise know Barry very well. He acts as Lucas and Dawn’s rival during Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum and will return in the upcoming remakes, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

In the anime, Barry shares many similarities with his game counterpart. He’s impatient and always in a rush, often running into people because he doesn’t look where he’s going. Barry is also very enthusiastic about Pokémon battles and wants to become the best Trainer in the world. Fantina even describes him as “full of life.” Indeed, Barry has energy to spare, and everyone around him gets a bit more anxious just by seeing him.

4 Iris: You’re On Your Way To Greatness

Ever since she was a child, everyone could tell Iris was on her way to the top. By the time she becomes Ash’s companion, she’s on an undefeated streak of battles and shows no sign of stopping. Her ambition is to become a Dragon Master, and she doesn’t let anything get in her way.

In one of the most recent episodes of Journeys, fans learn that Iris became Unova’s League Champion. Furthermore, her cute Axew evolved into Haxorus, taking her one step closer in her journey to become a Dragon Master. Iris’s determination is admirable, making her an unforgettable role model.

3 Gary Oak: You’re Certain Of Your Worth

Gary Oak is, without a doubt, Ash’s most memorable and likable rival. The two boys share a complicated love-hate relationship, with Gary teasing Ash for most of the anime’s first two seasons. Their rivalry reaches its peak during the Silver Conference when they face off in a rule-breaking Pokémon battle that Ash ultimately wins.

Although he comes off as arrogant and vain, Gary is surprisingly caring. He knows he’s talented, good-looking, and charming, and isn’t embarrassed about it. Furthermore, he also has the maturity to accept defeat and pursue new goals, eventually abandoning Pokémon training to become a Professor like his grandfather.

2 Goh: You’re Not Afraid Of Dreaming Big

Ash’s most recent companion is Goh, a young Trainer from Vermilion City whose goal is to catch Mew. Furthermore, his dream is to fulfill the franchise’s tagline, meaning he wants to capture every Pokémon. And considering there are currently 898 species, that’s an ambitious dream if there ever was one.

Still, he isn’t afraid of the challenge. As of the last Journeys episode, Goh has 87 different species, meaning he already caught almost 10% of all Pokémon. There’s still a long way to go, but if he already has 87 Pokémon at the age of ten, nothing is preventing him from achieving his dream.

1 Ash Ketchum: Family Is The Most Important Thing To You

Ash Ketchum is the protagonist of the anime and the face of the franchise. His name is synonymous with endurance, perseverance, and loyalty. It took him ten years, but he finally became a Pokémon League Champion, and he’s currently continuing his quest to become a Pokémon Master.

The most important thing in his life is his Pokémon team. Ash loves every one of his diverse collection of mons and considers them his family. He cares for them, guiding and helping them reach their full potential. He even releases some of them when the time is right, acting selflessly for their sake. Ash is the patriarch of his own little family and values them above everything else.
