Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Like Breaking Bad and Peaky Blinders, the proceedings in Starz Original Series Power initially unfolded with the pace of a tortoise’s stride but got better with each new season. It was easy to give up on Power in the first season, but if you made it to the second season, you’ve probably never looked back.

The show tells the story of James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a drug dealer and night club owner, who is eager to leave his life of crime behind and become a decent member of the New York elite. However, the circumstances around him prevent this from happening. There’s too much history that he has to deal with and too many associates who force him to keep killing or doing dirty deals. The show which will come to an end early next year has had numerous outstanding characters but these have been the ten best ones.

10 Cooper Saxe

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Saxe is a federal agent who is not so good at his job. Sadly, he believes he can take down James “Ghost” St. Patrick. In fact, he is obsessed with taking down Ghost. This obsession does more damage to him than the man he wants to put in jail. When you give yourself a task you aren’t good at, you end up looking incompetent. So when Saxe is totally unable to pin a crime on Ghost, he tries to plant evidence and coax witnesses. This leads to him being suspended from his job.

In the sixth season’s final episode before the midseason break, we see Saxe grabbing a gun and going to shoot Ghost at his nightclub. We are also shown other disgruntled characters who have had enough and decided to go and kill Ghost. One of them does but we don’t who it is just yet. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out.

9 Congressman Tate

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Just like Congressman Powell (Giancarlo Esposito) in Godfather of Harlem, Rashad Tate is a dirty politician who wants to become Governor of New York City. He tries to use James St. Patrick as a pon in his election campaign but James is too smart so he realizes what’s happening.

Eventually, James teams up with Tate’s rival who makes him his running mate. A frustrated Tate acknowledges that he is not going to win. However, he discovers that there is a plot to kill James. He tries to warn him but before he can say anything, James shuts him down and brags how he is better than him.

8 Joe Proctor

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Proctor is a crooked lawyer who always helps Ghost and Tommy. He is aware of all the crimes they are involved in and he has a few of his own too. He’s the closest thing to Saul Goodman. Sadly, in the sixth season, he ends up getting killed by Tommy after the ruthless gangster suspects him of being a snitch.

Proctor’s death is a painful one since Tommy sprayed him with bullets after his daughter has just left the building. The murder is also a painful one because it’s Ghost’s annoying son Tariq who opens the door pf the apartment for Tommy to enable him to reach Proctor.

7 Kanan

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Played by Rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson who is also one of the show’s producers, Kanan is a trigger happy street gangster. His stare alone instills fear in anyone he is talking to. He even kills his grown son because he thinks he is weak. Jesus Kanan!

Kanan also happens to be the man who taught Tommy and Ghost about the crime business. Unfortunately for him, his former students don’t really respect him that much. However, Ghost’s son Tariq adores him so Kanan corrupts him. He manages to work pretty well on his own until he meets hid death after a shootout with cops in the fifth season. Love by the sword, die by the sword, right?

6 Angela Valdez

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Angela Valdez is a federal prosecutor whose career is going well until she reconnects with her former lover James St. Patrick. A dilemma soon hits her when she discovers that Ghost, a drug dealer that she’s trying to take down, is actually James St. Patrick.

So, does she choose love or her career? She chooses both but this decision often puts her in a difficult position. In as much as she wants to do her job well and without bias, she can’t leave Ghost alone. She also knows he is married but she doesn’t care. Unfortunately, her loyalty to him eventually gets her killed.

5 Dre

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Dre is a man who only has his own interests at heart. You are never quite sure who Dre is working with. At one point he is working with Tommy, the next with Ghost and before you blink, he is giving information to the cops.

Despite the fact that he never has a proper stand, Dre never gets killed. Every time he double-crosses someone, you get the feeling that he’s about to be canceled but it never happens. He always finds a way out of every life-threatening situation. A building could even fall on Dre but he won’t die. Perhaps his contract states that he must be present until the final episode. Who knows?

4 Tasha

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

As Ghost’s wife, Tasha was always there for him. She supported him fully in his drug business and even learned the trade too. However, after he cheats with Angela Valdez, she totally changes. She tries to revenge on Ghost by having an affair with his lawyer but Ghost kills the lawyer.

Initially, she avoids taking down Ghost despite the fact that she knows too much. But after he becomes too selfish, she tries to give the federal agents clues that would lead to his arrest. Of course, James isn’t arrested because he has become too careful and wise enough to hide all his tracks.

3 James St. Patrick (Ghost)

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Among the many film and TV males that look good in suits, James St. Patrick and James Bond are the ones that stand out the most. Is it surprising that both of them are called James? Givenchy should use Ghost in all its advertising material.

In Power, the main character James St. Patrick is a drug lord but he does his best to hide it. He runs a nightclub and even contemplates joining politics at some point. In the sixth season, we see that he clearly wants to leave the world of crime alone but the world of crime won’t let him go. Due to his selfish decisions, he ends up turning every former associate into his enemy. That includes his best friend Tommy.

2 Tariq

Power 10 Best Characters Ranked

Every parent’s prayer is to not have a kid like Tariq. The son of Ghost and Tasha, Tariq is up there as one of the most annoying characters in TV history. His streak of making dumb decisions never ends. And despite being a schoolboy, he feels he is a tough guy who can sell drugs and hang out with bad guys.

His poor decisions even lead to his sister’s death. He also has no respect for his father and often yells at him, calling him Ghost, instead of dad. However, Tariq’s annoying mannerisms are what makes him fun to watch. You feel like punching the TV but you can’t wait to see what dumb decision he makes next. We might argue that he is the way he is because has no good role models around him but he really needs to do better.

1 Tommy Egan

Joseph Sikora has always deserved an Emmy for this role. Sadly, he keeps getting snubbed. His character Tommy is a Michelangelo of the crime world. He is intimidating enough to scare off competitors and ballsy enough to thrive in the New York underworld. Tommy is simply one of the best villains on TV.

Despite Ghost being the main character, it is Tommy who normally steals the show. His ruthlessness knows no limits. He has a body count like that of a 1980s action hero. He even killed his girlfriend at one point. Tommy is also an expert drug distributor. Surprisingly, he never gets caught. The authorities know he is a gangster but like Ghost, they cant pin a serious crime on him.
