Respawn expands its line of gaming nutrition products today with Respawn by 5, a new chewing gum created in partnership with 5 Gum that promises increased mental focus and enhanced reaction time for gaming. Razer sent us all three flavors: Pomegranate Watermelon, Tropical Punch, and Cool Mint for a taste test.

Mental Performance Chewing Gum

I’m a big fan of Respawn’s “mental performance” drink mixes, especially compared to the other similar products out there. If you’ve been to a gaming convention or esports event in the last few years you’ve likely seen close to a dozen different brands of powdered gamer drinks. I’ve tried them all (so you don’t have to) and I can confidently say Respawn is the best of the best. A lot of them taste like weird chemicals, some of them — like G Fuel, don’t even dissolve properly. Respawn is actually just delicious and, if the added vitamins give you a focus boost, even better.

Respawn by 5 is the second product developed by the brand and, just like the drink mix, offers performance-enhancing effects for gaming. It’s not an “energy gum” in the same way the drink isn’t an energy drink: there’s no caffeine, taurine, or any of that other stuff that gives you jittery energy and a harsh crash. Instead, the gum is designed for sustained mental focus and enhanced reaction time. Green Tea Extract and Vitamin B are the active ingredients that provide positive mental effects.

I’ve been off and on B-12 for years and I always have a good experience with it. Everyone’s bodies will respond differently to different things, but I think it’s pretty safe to say you don’t need to worry about a major rush or severe crash with Respawn by 5. I tried all 3 flavors back to back and I definitely felt an effect, but it’s nothing like chugging a red bull. For me, Respawn just puts me in the zone. When I play with Respawn I’m pressing buttons with purpose and thinking 2 steps ahead. I’m present, aware, and actively engaged in the game. Like getting good sleep, exercising, and eating healthy, Respawn is another tool that can set you up for success.

The Taste Test

Before I get into the flavors, it’s worth mentioning that this is 5 Gum quality gum, meaning if you’re familiar with the texture and feel of 5 Gum, you’re getting the same thing here. It’s got a really soft chew that doesn’t significantly harden or break apart over time, and after 30 minutes the flavor is still passively active. All 3 flavors have a really strong aroma, which definitely helps extend the flavor, but if you keep it in a drawer or purse or something the intensity of the smell may bother some people.

The Pomegranate Watermelon is only true carry over from the drink mix flavors and it’s probably the best one of the 3. It’s very sweet, almost like juicy fruit but stronger. If you’ve enjoyed the drink version you’ll probably like this too, but it isn’t exactly the same.

Tropical Punch tastes almost exactly like drink mix flavor Tropical Pineapple. It’s the most intense flavor of the 3 that almost seemed to last the longest. It’s sweet, tangy, and very pineapple-y. Tropical Pineapple was my least favorite flavor of the drink but it really grew on me over time, especially when poured over ice. It’s something of an acquired taste but if you’re into tropical, this flavor has a strong punch.

Cool Mint is a classic. It’s not too sweet, and it’s not intense like an Eclipse or Extra either. Peppermint 5 Gum is probably the closest cousin to Cool Mint. It’s just a really familiar, solid flavor that doesn’t try to be too overpowering or quirky. I think Cool Mint will likely be the most popular flavor overall.

Overall, the 3 types represent a good variety of flavor profiles. The mental performance effects will vary, but if you react well to vitamin B and green tea extract, you’ll definitely have a good experience with Respawn by 5.
