KJ Apa, who headlines Riverdale as Archie Andrews, revealed his favorite character on the show is Kevin Keller, played by Casey Cott. Developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for The CW, Riverdale is a teen-mystery drama series that features an ensemble cast based on the characters made famous in the pages of Archie Comics. The show also stars Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller. Riverdale season 4 ended abruptly in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing them to end the season without a proper finale.
Riverdale season 5 production did not start until September 2020, as COVID-19 restrictions in Vancouver demanded the cast and crew members to quarantine before filming. Even after its resumption, season 5 production was faced with several interruptions. In late September, Riverdale and several other CW shows halted filming due to COVID-19 testing delays. The shoot did not resume until October 7. The CW recently unveiled its delayed fall schedule, confirming a January 20, 2021 release date for Riverdale season 5.
Apa posted an Instagram story from the Riverdale set, where several castmates were filming season 5. In one of the posts, Apa revealed his favorite character from the show to be Kevin Keller, played by Casey Cott. “Love watching @caseycott. Kevin is my favorite character,” Apa captioned his story.
The shot Apa posted to Instagram featured Cott in the high school’s student lounge, indicating Riverdale is still filming the events that occur immediately after season 4. The CW announced that the series would do a seven-year time jump in season 5, but based on this photo, there’s still a story to be told in their High School years.
Kevin Keller initially appeared as a recurring character on Riverdale season 1. He was promoted to series regular from season 2 onward. Kevin is Betty’s openly gay best friend at Riverdale High School and the son of Sheriff Tom Keller (Martin Cummins). Kevin has dated Moose Mason (Cody Kearsley) and Joaquin DeSantos (Rob Raco) but is also known for sometimes acting rashly when presented with the opportunity to hook up with someone new. In season 3, he began dating Fangs Fogarty, who is portrayed by Drew Ray Tanner. Tanner has also been upped to series regular for season 5, meaning big things for Kevin.
Apa’s love for Kevin resonates well with fans’ admiration for the character. Kevin Keller is arguably one of Riverdale’s most underplayed characters, a fact that reflects negatively on the show and strengthens arguments that it has a representation problem. Although Cott is a regular on Riverdale, his character does not get much screen-space on the show. Cott’s portrayal of Kevin is fantastic, and fans love him for that. So now that Kevin’s on-and-off-again love interest Fangs has been promoted to the main cast, hopefully, Riverdale season 5 will use this as an opportunity to give Kevin (and Cott) the limelight he deserves.
